Is White Rice the Ultimate food prep?

Post by DundeePrepper »

So white rice is cheap, calorific and a good source of protein... it also keeps well..
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=9001

..nitrogen flowed storage tubs or oxy absorbers and mylar I think indefinitely

I haven't seen any mention of white rice flour though...

Basically a pestle and mortar, and a sieve will allow you to create white rice flour.. It's not as versitile as traditional grain flours but i've tried this and it works... (no idea about nutritional values etc)

White Rice Flour (needs to be really finely ground) and Water to a paste + heat = bread (bannock).

It's not the most tasteful but is certainly better than survival biscuits... we can all store rice as a staple food but to make bread adds another option.. If I get a chance I will upload a pic or 2 of the results..

You could be right, given that half the population of the planet eats rice as a staple food. If you have some vegetables , bit of meat or fish, or if times really hard, bung in some foraged greens. You could certainly live on it.

A cup of medium grain white rice cooked has less than 5g of protein, but how much of that can actually be used by the human body I don't know. Sorry but I don't count that as a good source of protein.

Rice is a good starchy food which is cheap and can be stored well for a long time.

The NHS recommends that starchy foods form about a third of what we eat, although personally I don't eat that much. I don't often eat any grains (no bread, no biscuits etc) because when I do it makes me unhealthy. I don't eat a lot of starchy food because I don't need that much energy and I'd rather have fat anyway (starch and fat both being fuels for the body) because traditional fats like butter and lard and dripping carries with it more nutrients than starchy foods like rice or potatoes. Tallow might not be the most tasty but it is a very stable food. Keeps for years if not decades without much effort. It also has applications beyond food too, such as quenching steel for edged tools.

????? Thought we were talkin' about rice- where does quenching steel come in to it ?
Granted that rice is a carbohydrate, not a protein source. Along with potatoes , rice is THE food of the world.

I wouldn't regard rice as the ultimate prep food for 1 simple reason. It's long cooking time. Rice flour for baking is a different matter. Several other dried foods, such as peas, chickpeas and rolled oats have a much shorter cooking time and the advantage of being edible when raw, after a period of soaking in water. I do keep some rice in store, but it's the last on my list of dried foods.

I buy several kinds of rice products: long grain rice, ground rice which I mix with milk to make a great rice pud and gluten free flour which contains a lot of rice. Good for lots of things and stores forever! For nutrition however brown rice contains vitamin B1 which is needed to maintain a normal heart rate and for your cells to be able to "traffic" carbo and sugars properly. Marmite is excellent for this, maybe not mixed in with the rice, tho! Check out health food stores for brown rice flour, "spaghetti" and noodles. Btw, heard on the news price of rice will go up because of crops destroyed in bad weather last year. Stock up!
