Take the best of both worlds- there is lots of private purchase items- e.g Blackhawk, Spec Ops, Helikon, 5.11 which are tough and usable. I get most of mine off ebay and far less than the shops etc

Personally any military kit I have is surplus pre-1990 and the rest is readily available civvie kit sourced from new suppliers. I'm not really that fussed providing that the kit will do the job it was designed for and is cost effective for me at the time/
