I reckon that is the best way. Find what works in your area/ soil and go for it. I have tried everything in my garden over the last 25 years. The land I had at the top end a couple of years ago I could grow cracking root crops. So much so, I was selling them on. I am now at the stage with the plot where I have grown different varieties and those listed are the ones that do well on the allotment and have the flavour and keeping/ preserving characteristics we want.
All I have to do now is wait for spring......never was very patient.![]()

I'm going to try to grow tomatoes AGAIN this year, discovered the mogsplosh dislikes my new Christmas Cactus plant, sooo I will put this to the front of the tomatoes and see how it goes!
