If your memory is not perfect or you need to pass information to some one else then marking your map is kinda unavoidable and 'encrypting' it would be the way. But even a seemingly random dot on a map can give you a centre point. E.g you get attacked (post shtf) and recover a map from the attackers. There's a dot marking a church, if its a rv then maybe its within walking distance of their location, maybe its a bearing point so there track must pass somewhere it can be seen from. It may not give you their location but its somewhere to start looking from. As with most things its a balance of pros and cons, its useless having your stash hidden if you can't find it yourself...

if you get attacked and your map is taken, you are probably not going to be around to care about it 1 way or another, any raider is not going to leave witnesses around.
