I thought it was worth mentioning although you probably appeciate it and understand it completely that its most likely not that it costs MORE to produce the Eggs / Milk / Sugar etc in your Trolley but that the Value of the £100 has gone down , or is worth-less.

I think both of the things you mention play a part. But it IS costing more to produce AND transport food, due to a number of factors:
Rising fuel costs
A depreciating ££ which has increased import costs (the UK imports around 40% of the food we eat)
Increased oil prices increases the cost of the plastic food packaging
A rapidly increasing global population
Increased wealth in developing nations leading to a change in dietary habits (China and India, namely)
Many crops are now being diverted to make biofuel, which is pushing up the cost of staples such as corn
Let's also factor in the recent extreme weather events that we've seen around the globe, and it makes for a pretty worrying picture, overall.
