i really like the idea.. for some of the reasons already said in this post and others i think a small island with a very loose community.. all working for the common good but with a little space to spread out. maybe include a central safe location though. a retreat for if needed

A wonderful idea mog; an idyllic, egalitarian community where everyone lives in harmony, working altruistically to overcome hardships and adversity.

Unfortunately I don't think it would be quite that simple. I doubt you'll find anywhere in the UK., not even on an island, where you can escape modern day bureaucracy. ("No sorry, you can't build that, it's against planning laws!!")

I also suspect that very quickly certain people in the group would begin to push their ideas and views on everyone else and try to assume authority over others. There are bound to be clashes of opinion and probably a power struggle which would threaten to fragment the group and tear it apart.

I think that after any major SHTF event initially small groups would probably form together and, given time, these groups might slowly amalgamate. It would have to be a gradual process though. Democratic communities only work where they evolve over many many years.

Sorry if this all sounds rather negative mog, I'm not trying to be negative or critical, the basic idea is great, but I see it as almost impossible to implement in our modern day society.

nice I was just thinking then if you made a steal support you could have a roof window like a little pond with a plate glass base so light would come thru you could use this solar action to warm food and water as it would act like a looking glass
