the pound emergency shelter!
Re: the pound emergency shelter!
I'm in a bit of a quandary with things like this. On the one hand very cheap and potentially useful but on the other it's effectively a throwaway item which is a concept I deplore. I have some off cuts of visqueen , thin plastic used for dpc's , that would do exactly the same job and they are a "waste" product that hasn't been purposely made and shipped across the planet.

as this has gone off topic I will add to it it has been recognised for years that the official police crime stats are flawed for various reason other than that BBC story. Different force have in the past collated information differently and even at local station level what was a crime their would not be logged at a different station. It is all about the human experience.
The most universally regarded crime stats are thought to be the British crime survey which can be found here http://www.crimesurvey.co.uk/

Thanks for that just looking now, and straight off seeing the increase in reported sexual offences looks awful at first glance then it mentions the Saville effect, not wanting to get into that, but it goes to show how statistics can get effected.Hamradioop wrote:as this has gone off topic I will add to it it has been recognised for years that the official police crime stats are flawed for various reason other than that BBC story. I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

If the aforementioned BBC report http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-25002927 is correct, than how can the Crime Survey be believed? The expression "garbage in, garbage out" seems to apply.Hamradioop wrote:as this has gone off topic I will add to it it has been recognised for years that the official police crime stats are flawed for various reason other than that BBC story. The BBC should command respect as unbiased and accurate, sadly neither are always the case, An American friend of the family once said to me " don't believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see" he was if not the first one of the first American sailors based here in Plymouth during WW2 to marry a Plymouth girl and stayed here for the rest of his life, on that advice neither could be written in stone, yet both could be a loose indicator of the crime situation. Do The States have anything simular?

A more authoritative report that has been around for the longest period of time is the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Report located at http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/ucr. As of now there has not been a nation wide scandal of U.S. law enforcement systemically under reporting crime.Hamradioop wrote:the US equivalent appears to be here Tom; http://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=dcdetail&iid=245
Another UK media report that covers the same issue is located at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/ ... gures.html The media exposure of government corruption and lying should be commended. When preparing for civil unrest it is useful to understand how large the local and national criminal threat is. Even more importantly, if the allegations are true, it should further shake our trust of government in its dealings with the citizenry.

Now there are two words that don't sit comfortably together in either of our countries, trust and Government

The most authoritative U.S. data is compiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
