I think a lot depends on where you live, what kind of house you have. A cottage hidden in the woods or the back roads through hills is far far better than being in a city. Then you can stay under the radar, cut and burn wood all you like, grow what you can, and add in ferrets and a fishing rod. That might sound simplistic but I know plenty who live well like that. And that all cuts down the amount of money you need in the first place,,, you know?
I would love to live in a house like this, but alas not in my price range, I have 2 allotments close by and a school near. At the moment we are prepping by trying to aquire off grid tools and equipment that will last, ie hand cranked drills, saws, planes etc. We will not be buying anything extravagent for quite a while.
Where you live is about mindset. I don't live in the back of beyond ( we are rural),and I live in a terraced farmworkers cottage. It has a large garden, true.I fish and shoot etc. However, If you have access to two allotments ,you are halfway there! You are going for off grid tools - excellent idea. How about a bit of small scale solar? You know, little gizmos like radios and phone chargers. Some urban foraging or skip raiding?

I am working with what I have right now, like you, there is no spending. My mindset is one of " how can I improvise, how can I work round that? " For instance,my greenhouse is in full swing.I am getting very low on 3" plant pots. My elderly neighbour would generally help me out,but of course we have to maintain social distance. What to do? Tip out the recycling bin! Tin cans and plastic cartons galore.Punch holes in ' em and boom! Mindset.
i agree and a solar system is on the to buy list. Also whenever i replace goods i try to get 12v so it is solar ready.

My current project is building composting toilets. This reduces water use and provides the much needed compost that is so hard to get right now. We installed our first 2 a few days ago and we are amazed by how much cleaner it is! No more poo stains to scrub of wc`s, no smells, I wish i did this years ago. Now I`m thinking about how to build a compost bin out of straw bales to make a hot heap. But I totally agree prepping is a mindset

It has indeed been done in the USA Lil, Pres Roosevelt in the 1930's and something similar by Pres Nixon in the 1970's.

More likely IMO would be for the removal of cash and the outlawing of certain types of crypto currencies (so called safe coins) and assets. The IMF have already discussed this and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up yesterday when Pres Trump called an emergency meeting of the G7 to propose a "GLOBAL" response to confront the economic situation. Watch this space.....

A One World Govt? A One World Digital Currency? A One Size Fits All Governance? We are living in very uncertain times where the unimaginable can quickly become reality.

I think I want Scotland to declare UDI now. Right now.
Anything with Trump in it, on it, or near it, is bound to be very very bad...

It was a joke... I dont see how it would ever be remotely possible to declare UDI from the entire world via the G7 and Trump

My wife's family comes from the west coast , Tarbert / Campbelltown . Some of them emigrated to Australia many years ago but when we visited them the accent was still there. Another guy i worked with was close to retirement and had moved down here in his twenties but still had his too . You must be the exception to the rule :D

From what I understand, yes they effectively outlawed owning gold for a time but it wasn't confiscated as such, you were forced to sell it to the government (I think at the going rate). Still not ideal but not as if you suddenly lost all your value/wealth.

So,before The Virus, the world economic outlook was shaky to say the least. Now we have a forced global shutdown of the Economy.Governments around the world are borrowing/printing money like there's no tomorrow, and that leads to inflation, and measures to curb rampant inflation generally include raising interest rates.Well, right now there is plenty of room to raise them! Then of course there is the prospect of debt default, and lenders get twitchy,so outfits like the IMF step in and impose austerity budgets.Remember this in Greece?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-33307263

Of course, all the above leads to unemployment. So,less folks earning money they can spend, less tax revenues, and more claims from an already overburdened welfare system.

Aah well,at least the sun is shining.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Robert Frost.

Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.

But at least they can fly in workers to pick our fruits for harvest, I would have thought there would have been quite a few locals very keen to get out from lockdown and work the fields instead of flying people here to do it. I have not seen any adverts for fruit pickers or farm workers and we live in quite a high farming area. I do wonder if the farmers are mistreating the staff to such a level they prefer not to use locals who would complain. This may be viewed as a political post so I best stop, admin please remove if needed
