It's just occured to me as i'm thinking about doing this the last thing i'd want is to misplace the drive and someone have access to everything.
I was thinking the same. I've started getting some info on a geek stick I carry in my wallet but if I lose my wallet then there's a lot of information that could be useful to criminals.

I always used to use TrueCrypt even after the developers did their alarming announcement and ran for the hills. However, I've also switched to VeraCrypt now as a couple of vulnerabilities have been found recently.

Cheers for the pointer, I'll have a better look at that later.

From a security standpoint, the best combination of tools on Windows that are free is VeraCrypt, Avast AV, Firefox with HTTPS everywhere and mailvelope for webmail encryption and Tor.

Everything but Avast runs perfectly of a memory stick.

Whatever happened to TrueCrypt? In the last firm we used to use their stuff on USB's but i heard they arent around from someone in the office a few months ago.

On topic - i'll also give veracrypt a look, thanks.

They found a number of security holes and the guys maintaining the code base didn't want to fix them. The code was audited and the holes were patched by a new group and a few different forks were created of the original project with new people.

Not entirely sure why you would do it tho, Alloneword can you tell me what sort of scenarios you see this being useful (ie why you would need these docs because of flooding ?), as I guess I am stuck in " I only need my zombie knife" :D situations............?????
The stuff i'm doing is based solely round the river thames flooding, it's a combination of things, the nightmare housing situation in London, this includes private owners/private renters and people like me in social housing,
now i have zero confidnece in the local council and nat govt being ready for this kind of situation, so if the worst was to happen loads of us would be homeless, some would get put up by families, some will have insurance and get put in hotels, some will be moved out of london (social housing mainly) and i also have visions or parks being taken over and make shift tents put up (army type) and people staying there for some time and i would be one of those poor sods, Bike docs to keep plod happybanking/card info so i can ring them and cancel cards or have cards redirected to somewhere else, BT/Water/Electric to ring and stop any/all charges, passports for ID, you may need to prove who you are to get a place somewhere and i feel i'd be at an advantage if i had this info ready to hand over, after all it will be dog eat dog when it happens, this is what is hard copied, also on the USB3 key will be some images etc,

I'd back this key fob up every now and then that way so long as i could grab my fob i would have everything on there so just grabbing that will give copies in pdf format i can read almost anywhere, this stems from the floods in the West Country the other year where people were saying they have left with nothing and someone mentioned paperwork so that was put in my mind to make sure i had copies of those vital stuff i may need.

All1
Please bear in mind i am prepping for the River Thames to flood and how i can get to safe ground, I'm not worried about the end of the world..... I'll die with the other Minions.
I can't trust Govt or local Council to help me so i have to help myself.

With VeraCrypt you can either encrypt the whole USB stick so you need to enter a password before accessing the stick itself, or you can create an encrypted container which is just a file you open with the VeraCrypt application. The latter is better as you can include the software you need on the stick to ensure the files are readable.

Personally, I just use a password encrypted zip file. Enough to deter the opportunistic thief, but not so complex as to be a hassle to access in an emergency. For example, if you need to install software to access your files, will you have access to the right operating system? Will you have the right permissions to do so? etc.

Simple is better, IMHO, in emergency situations.
