Tough (& waterprrof) USB 3 ThumbDrive

Post by Alloneword »

I have my vital paperwork (Driving Lic/Birth Cert/Marrage cert etc) hard copied and stored in waterproof document holder, however i'd like to keep this information plus others in pdf format stored on a USB3 Thumb Drive, I need it to be waterprrof and tough enough to withstand being dropped at 30mph on to the road surface, now it's easy to look for tough thumbdrives but i'm looking for some personal recomendations from people who have use the drives in anger they want to suggest, so where is my money going, Kingston, Corsair or somewhere else?

All1
Please bear in mind i am prepping for the River Thames to flood and how i can get to safe ground, I'm not worried about the end of the world..... I'll die with the other Minions.
I can't trust Govt or local Council to help me so i have to help myself.

I've been using corsair survivor USB keys for years and have never been let down by them yet, they're not the smallest or prettiest but they're the best I've seen for not breaking etc, one of mine has even been through the washing machine and tumble dryer  the stickers on the outside had come off and it looked a lot cleaner :D but still works to this day

I' don't know about usb drives but I do know SD memory cards (the sort used in cameras etc) are pretty tough. I've put several of my neighbours SD cards through the wash and tumble try (I had to do washng for them) they were all fine, and my dryers an old one it get.... Err "jolly" hot, I've also dropped a few of mine and they've all been ok, admittedly it wasn't at 30mph though.

why not wrap your drive in bubble wrap or whatever and put in one of those, I've got a well wrapped mini sd card in mine, maybe not bomb proof but dam close.

My EDC is an older style Kingstone usb2 se9. Pretty tough device. The reviews on the newer ones (USB3 devices) complain of thinner metal casing that dents too easilly.

SD cards are indeed virtually indestructible. But are not as easy to read - you need either an SD card slot on a laptop or a card reader (obviously).

So for me, it's about what it is you are prepping for? Are you just wanting resilient digital backups of your critical personal data, or are you looking for a medium that you could readily extract data from, say at a crowded border crossing, to prove you and your family are who you say you are?

Apparently theres one called an EP Memory GorillaDrive 32GB Ruggedized USB (also available in 16gb) I've not used one but a mate in the US swears by them.

Smart phones use SD cards so that will do as a reader and I am guessing that most of us would have our phone at said border crossing etc.... :

would do several copies and have them dotted about, car, coat, wallet etc as they take up virtually zero space..........

would an SD card survive an EMP ? maybe something a little larger, but fully encased could be a better bet than something smaller?
