I'm another one getting on a bit, but do try and stay in good shape. One thing I have been doing is always walking to the shops with a ruck. It is a bout a mile to the shops and if I need more items than will fit in the ruck I make two trips. Have got a few odd looks from people, but I am past caring what others think. It is good excercised and gets one used to carrying weight on your back. Also have just purchased a pushbike and want to start using this on a regular basis.

to be honest guys - imo prepping without fitness has no sense.
do you feel safe in some dodgy areas of your city/town? imagine that after shtf your whole city/town may look like dodgy area. now think who has more chances to be attacked/robbed:
a) 180cm 80kg athlete?
b) 180cm 95kg beer fan with waist big like barrel and shoulders narrow as door key?
c) 180cm 65kg guy dressed in tight trousers with scarf around his neck even during summer?

IF you treat prepping serious then fitness is important.
what I would recommend is to train crossfit - nice atmosphere as it's in classes where people know each other, entertaining, fun and builds fitness a lot, plus different people, different age - really good - cost is 50-70 quid in normal towns/cities a month and probably well over 100 in London

martial sports - notice I mentioned martial sports not martial arts. It is said that a man fights not martial art but for self defence I would avoid aikido, taekwondo, etc as they look good and I admire people who train it but there are better fighting styles easier to learn, and would focus on boxing, kick boxing, thai boxing, escrima or mma classes. don't be affraid to start it even when you're after 50. nobody will jump on you and beat you to death, and these classes raise self confidence. also great and entertaining. cost is around 5-7 quid a lesson

gym/fitness club - great if you know what to do and train with plan iso running around like headless chicken

training at home - also great and cheap plus saves time as you don;t have to travel to club - but again you need to have plan

and of course any form of sport benefits for your health and is better than watching telly or sitting at computer all evening. so stop seeking excuses and start training - it is for your benefit

There was that doomsday preppers program about the girl that went to the gym and needed to get 10 miles to her bug out vehicle , she was useless . Forget the gym , get your boots on and hit the tarmac, it's great in a warm light gym but not reality , get out and get the fresh air about you .

And if your fit go get a labouring job on your hoilidays for a week and see how unfit you are .

And keep your martial arts , learn street fighting , becasuse that's what your going to be up against

so you're saying there's no point to train? to do sports?
I know gym does not cover everything - for example I was chopping wood the other day and I do it only when I go to my mother in law - it is difficult when you don't do it on regular basis and I bet a person who does wood chopping every day would do it 5x faster, but let's not underestimate gym.

to mentioned above I can add running/cycling, hiking, triathlon and anything that keeps you away from couch and tv. and I will still defend my opinion - fit looking person has lower chances to be attacked, plus person who knows how to fight will have more self confidence and you can smell it from far. a chubby or skinny person who walks with head down will be easiest target.

as about what you call street fighting - type on yt street fighter vs box, or something similar and you'll see what is the advantage of martial sport vs random swinging with hands by some chav. besides once you train you have sparrings as well and it means experience

Well yes if you think it's your best advantage , going to the gym , batter on , but do you take the car to the gym? Or do you cycle , run , walk , ? Are you going to go to they gym , jump on a treadmill , to escape the "insert whatever " or are you going to run over tarmac, slabs, grass, kerbstones in boots , because you'll need them rather than your 100 quid posing gym trainers , in whatever weather is out there , and no I'm not talking about games consoles , but living in the real world . Where going out for a quiet drink with your mates turns into a fight for your life when the neds with knife blades thinks they'll have a go at you .

Streeet fighting Glasgow style .

I ride or walk everywhere. as about running - of course running outside is better than treadmill. and as about knives - when you see knife and somebody who really wants to harm you - RUN and don't believe "defend from knife bull**t"
as you're from Glasgow and maybe live in neighbourhood where people fight a lot - you may be prepared for fight better than average fighter. but different people live in different environments and for some sparring may be the only way to gain experience as they never fought on the street and don't seek problems

now this is what I hate most. scum with knives. skinny **** attacking people in packs like animals. they cannot fight, they cannot stand 1 vs 1 in real fight. years ago when I was a kid we had 1 vs 1 fights, there were rules, today thick twats attack in 10 vs 1 groups and think they are tough.
Hope nobody harmed you or your mates when you were attacked

2 words. KRAV MAGA

All round fitness and major self defence training. My OH has been doing this for 6months now and is fitter than he's ever been (cycles and runs) and he will hit 50 next year. He is teased for being the oldest but the young uns don't hold back.

Try it!!!!

I was tempted to go but it is too far from me to go there on regular basis. I've heared that a lot depends on coach with Krav Maga and that some teach well and some sell bollocks. I've also heared that Krav Maga is good as topup to or continuation of martial sport in other words - it is good to go for Krav Maga after you got basis of some striking method (ie boxing), but it is what I've heared from others and not my own opinion. If I had It closer I would try. Glad your 50 yrs old trains something rather than sitting on the couch ;-)
good luck
