poverty prepping or prepping on a budget

Post by Hamradioop »

I have just found Susan Gregersen's Blog called poverty prepping http://povertyprepping.blogspot.co.uk/. Susan has several books available on Kindle and in print here Amazon page is at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Susan-Gregersen ... _pel_pop_1.
Susan lives in Montana in a off grid home. She is living the life so to speak. Some of the topics in here blog cover dehydrating eggs, buying seed, Homemade MREs and many other subjects. Susan books are worth a read as well.

Thanks for this! I hopped over to take a look, and was blown away :) particularly interesting (I'm always fascinated by low-input gardening) was the pickled purslane - this is the wikipedia article on purslane - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portulaca_oleracea - an annual succulent with a taproot, able to tolerate poor soils, edible stems, leaves and buds, contains more omega 3 fatty acids than any other vegetable, plus all sorts of other goodies. I'm buying some seeds off ebay or amazon today :)

I have all her E books. Great reading and great stories.
Another good (American) author, who writes and lives the same way as Gregerson, is Sharon Astyk-'Independence Days'.

If you are after some low cost ready meals for your pack, or just for home, I noticed that Morrisons are selling their boil in a bag Uncle Ben's flavoured rice for £1 instead of £1.89. I bought a dozen yesterday.

I keep these in my day pack as a MRE but they are also mighty tasty if you add some boiling water to make a meal in a few minutes. Less bulky than a pot noodle too.

Have you tried the uncle bens rices in the pouches? They come in lots of flavours and are often on offer. Either microwave in the pack or heat gently in a saucepan. I take these for lunch when it's cold and miserable.

Combined with a boil-in-the-bag curry from your local Asian grocery they make a very good and quick meal. We've had "Indian meals" on the side of windy, wet hills. The curries tend to ber very salty through, which is good if you are working hard but not so good for prolonged use.

Those are the ones. They are £1 at the moment. They boil in the bag well if you don't want the hassle of washing out a pot. They are a perfect size for a crusader cup, just add some water inside the bag, enough to moisten the rice, then put the bag in your mess tin or cup, then boil up. Add a dash of chicken or pheasant and bob's* your uncle, you have a tasty low cost, lightweight ready meal.

*Strictly speaking, it's Ben that's your uncle.
