do you include neighbors?

Post by iamliberty »

I always encourage the inclusion of the community in preparedness endeavors. You don't have to get all :tinfoil on them and tell them you believe Z day is coming. Here we get a lot of Hurricane damages so we talk hurricane preparedness. I would like to work a community watch as well.

Being in the country side, in a small'ish community, we talk preps at some point or another throughout the year. From early harvest and winter preps to water course and wild foul conservation efforts. I like to poke my nose in and encourage the prepping mentality in ways that will benefit the community, and thankfully it's quite easy because we work so closely with each other.

As for including them into the reasons behind why I feel the need to have hidden cashes and fortified water butts all over the place. No. But only because for one, they would all think I was mad :p preparing for something that might never happen would be foolish to most.

Haha fair enough, any particular reason for not including them?

I don't tell my neigbours I prep but do from time to time bring up the subject of preparedness in a round about sort of way. The village where I live was cut off for a few days during the snow a few years back and many of my neighbours were caught out. With winter approaching I've had some conversations about this and some of them are stocking up on food and alternative heating fuel (calor gas heaters and the like), blankets and shovels in the car, but most just haven't learn't from their mistakes.

I've toyed with the idea of sending the letter (anonymously) that was posted on this forum recently to my nearest neighbours explaining the benefits but don't really know if it's a good idea (not sure why, just a feeling in the back of my mind).

A community is always going to be more resilient than a collection of individuals but no one knows I prep.

This sort to ties in with the "spreading the word " thread. Do I go full out and explain to the neighbours? No to be quite honest. I get on with them ok but don't feel close enough for a full disclosure although they must get some idea overlooking the vegetables etc.. They too have some of the garden put to food and keep chickens and birds so they may very well be thinking the same although I doubt it judging by some of their other actions. They are probably , however , by far the most likely neighbours I would confide in , others don't appear to be making even the slightest efforts to prepare.
Hinting and observations are the way I go and if an event never takes place it won't go further than that.

It's an American letter looking at the content so may need a bit of tweaking to make it more local but in essence a decent idea although I reckon 99% of the letters would end up in the bin but still better than nothing.

I don't include my neighbours at all. Some can barely get through a week without the need to borrow a cup if this, a tin of that and ooh do you have any.... I don't mind so much most of the time but get peeved when they show me their bargain non essential/luxury purchases at times. I prep for my immediate family, my sister and her daughter, although she has no idea that I do this on the scale that I do.
Behind every great man is an even greater woman. She carried you, raised you and made you who you are.
