New to prepping - how should I prepare for Ebola?

Post by DangerRunner »

Hey there!

I am fairly new to prepping and the recent Ebola worries has lead to to do alot of research into things.

The people on here seem pretty good at all this stuff so it will be great if you could tell me how I should prepare for the worst case scenario. (I have a basic amount of knowledge such as how Ebola works and things such as bug out bags)

You do not appear to have introduced yourself on the new members section. Please do so.

Welcome to the forum both!

Its probably important to take care of basic prepping, it makes preparing for specific scenarios a lot easier - a week of no-cook food (i.e. tinned, plus dried fruit!), water for the same amount of time, a couple of months worth of other food, candles and heating in case of a power cut, a first aid kit. Then for ebola, you expand on an ordinary first aid kit to include some protective gear ... but you need to research it first.

Where are you with your preps at the moment?

It's interesting to see just how much worry Ebola is causing, were it to get a foothold in a western city chances are protective clothing would be an absolute minimum, the issue is if you go out and touch someone or something infected with your clothing on, disinfecting it or anything else that you bring home with you, at the moment though when one looks at what could happen to any person on any given day in the way of accidents, Ebola is a fairly low risk, the trick is to neither down play or panic about it's significance.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

How to prepare for Ebola:-

1. Research it to see how it actually spreads so you can ignore myths put out about it.
2. Basic prepping as can be seen from other posts on the forum. Some stocks of food, water, medical supplies, independent heating / cooking ( not reliant on gas electricity supplies). The basic prepping is useful for a variety of potential problems so it is worth doing in any event.
3. Be calm.

Do not:-

1. Panic buy food / water / fuel. If you want to stock up do it slowly otherwise you may put others in fear and spread panic buying.
2. Believe everything you read in the media about Ebola. It is not a weaponised virus spread by the elite to kill Africans/ poor people / everyone. It is an outbreak that would have happened at some point and we are dealing with it. It will not spread like [insert film name like Outbreak /Contagion here].
3. Act irrationally. The sky is not falling down.

no, or maybe not yet. If there was an ebola situation, I think it would be more likely that some basic key services going down as a result of it (such as hospital and ambulance services due to being used up by any ebola cases. make sure you have first aid kit and some basic medicines in to look after yourself if you do get sick) and that may be as bad as it might get for you. Ok, sky news might be saying that we are the third most likely country to get the disease, but that doesn't mean to say that it will affect you directly. Having enough food in stock to keep you alive in the short term and some water purification tablets / technology, would probably be enough for now in my humble opinion (which is all i can offer and that means that its not fact).
