Hi,
My name is Mick and i'm new to this site.

I've decided to start prepping seriously for when those 'What if' situations become a reality.

In the back of my mind are the thoughts that serious flooding in my area are becoming a real possibility again. We flooded quite seriously in Hull back in 2007 and had a Tidal Surge at the back end of last year. Most of Hull is at sea-level or below and is situated on a major floodplane. Over the years i've also been stranded by heavy snow a few times and don't want to have a repeat of that anytime soon.

I've had an EDC kit for some time (Multitool/Surefire Light) as i've worked as a Security Officer for many years and it became the norm for me to carry a number of things for my job. Also, since 1992 I've held a Radio Amateur Licence (G7NNT/M0NNT) and will be adding in a handheld radio when funds will allow. For the present moment I have a Marine VHF Transceiver that I can carry when I'm out on the coast.

Right now i'm putting together a multi-purpose kit to use as a Get-home / bug-out / survival bag. I have the makings of a decent kit put together already but I will need to fill it out some more with food as it's lacking in that area.

My main means of transport is a motorcycle that I use to travel all over the North of England. I often travel to remote places where help can be difficult to summon due to remoteness and lack of phone signal. Although I carry a First Aid Kit on my bike, I recently found that I was in need of it and despite it being reasonably comprehensive, I didn't have the relevant stuff in there. I was bitten by an Adder up on the North Yorkshire Moors. Luckily it was a dry bite it could have been much more serious.

I think have some really valid reasons to build a pack that will get me out of trouble when the time arises.

Regards

Hello and welcome, The BaoFeng UV-5R 136-174/400-480 MHz Dual-Band with DTMF CTCSS DCS FM Ham Two Way Radio series can be purchased fairly reasonably.

I've been looking at those on eBay. Surprisingly cheap.
I have a 2m mobile and a 70cm mobile but i'm not active right now. A handheld might be very useful and may kindle my interest a bit more.

Hello Trawlerman, welcome to the forum - great intro. And my word, between the North Sea and the Yorkshire Moors, yes, you really do need a good Get Home Bag, at the very least!

Do you use the motorbike over the winter too?

Can I ask about the adder bite? "Dry bite" is self explanatory I guess, what did you do after it happened?

Anyway, enjoy looking around the forum, there's a lot here thats really interesting.

I do ride in Winter but only when i'm going out of town. If i'm travelling in the tow I use the bus (advantages of having a free bus pass). When out on the bike I always carry a FAK, Food, Water, Phone, Waterproofs, Hi-viz tabard, Surefire LED torch, basic tools. Once of twice i've needed these and make a point of carrying them at all times now.

Regarding the Adder bite. It happened on the North Yorkshire Moors at Goathland. I jumped over a wall and the other side was a mass of brambles. The snake was in there and I must have disturbed it. A few minutes later I felt really tired and sat down on the hillside and had a drink and some glucose tabs. I thought I was just suffering effects of my Diabetes. It wasn't until I got home that I noticed the two puncture marks on my left ankle. A quick look at my boots confirmed that there were also two needle marks in the same place.

A visit to the local Minor Injuries centre the next confirmed that there were no major problems with it. The punctures marks had scabbed over and didn't show any signs of infection luckily.

Hi trawlerman, good to see another local on here, I'm a Hull lad myself.

I've just signed up after getting interested in prepping from watching some videos on youtube. After looking into the state of our banking system and discovering just how it's all set up I felt compelled to start prepping just in case of collapse, also potential fuel crisis or flooding like yourself, both of which we have experienced over the years. I was lucky not to get hit during the floods thankfully but I know many who wasn't.

I've always been into camping so have had the gear to bug out if needed, I just feel like maybe now is the time to get into some proper prepping for something more long term rather then just a weekend/week away.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hello to a fellow hullensian/kingstonian? No doubt I'll see you around the forums.

Thanks for getting in touch StashCache

Maybe i'm being paranoid but I see some bad stuff coming up in the not too distant future. Recently we've had fuel shortages, rioting on the streets, major flooding, winter bringing the infrastructure to a halt, banks collapsing etc.

It's my personal belief that the Government are working to their own agenda and the public will lose out all ends up whilst the various ministers line their pockets out of greed. We watch so much sci-fi on TV and I wonder just how much of it is coming to life right under our very noses?
When the SHTF the government will cast us all adrift and leave us to fend for ourselves. Not just the british people but people all over the world. That's why I believe in trying to do as much as we can to become self sufficient is an important subject. Even with relatively minor matters - in the scope of things - such as flooding, the government are so unprepared that we cannot afford to look to them for help.

Anyway, glad to see you about. It seems that there are quite a few of us from Hull and it's surrounding area.
