Hi from the South-West

Post by Blackfriar »

Hi everyone
Pretty new to the idea of "prepping" but so far I've read about some really great ideas which I'm thinking about implementing.

Looking forward to talking with you all
Cheers

Please tell us more about yourself. What got you into thinking about prepping?
I'm prepping for my OH and teenage kids. They 'get' it but don't really help out. My OH is getting used to the idea - Ebola has made her prick her ears up.
I'm planning mainly for what I call the slow fall - a gradual erosion of living standards, services and freedoms.

Hello and welcome. As you are in the south West Winter time can be interesting when the snow falls.

Hi blackfriar
Like Hobo, I'd love to hear what you're prepping for. I've just seen your storing water thread, sounds good. How about food and fuel?

I've been watching prepping/survivalist videos on Youtube for years, but I've never prepped myself. An AAA flashlight and a mini Victorinox on my keys is about as prepped as I get. Some of the recent world events have really prompted me to consider how fragile the infrastructure is in this country, albeit better than a lot of other countries. The 2011 riots alarmed me. It was clear to see how thinly our emergency services were spread. Hoodies running amok is one thing, but imagine the effect of thousands of genuinely desperate/hysterical rioting across our towns and cities.

The Ebola outbreak has also alarmed me. Not so much the virus itself, but more the thought of severely reduced or halted services, panic buying and dangerous behavior which would go hand in hand with a serious outbreak in Europe. Finally, the other night I read Selco's "One Year In Hell" piece and something just clicked.

Having short to long term food, water, heat and security options in my house seems like a very sensible thing to do at this time. I've been surprised at just how readily my family has accepted the idea of prepping. I was expecting more resistance - but I think the Ebola news has spooked everyone to some degree!

Drinking water is number 1 for me, so that's my first task. Relatively cheap and easy to set up and maintain.

Next I'll be buying and storing enough dried goods to endure medium-term food shortages. Big initial investment, but there's no price I could put on my family's health so I'll try to do the best I can with whats available. I will try to expand and diversify my food store after that.

I have a 6kw woodburner in storage which could be installed if necessary. I have no wood stored, nor do I really have the space at the moment. We're surrounded by firewood, but also people who mostly rely on utility services. This is something to think about.

I've read a few sarcastic articles in the mainstream press about preppers, and certainly the US tv shows don't help the image. I simply view the whole idea of starting to prep as improving your organizational skills. All of these skills and philosophies would have been second nature to our great-grandparents, but we have become very complacent and lazy as a society... and I firmly put my self in that category too!

Really glad to be a member now, and hope to learn and share a lot. Cheers!
