Veggie/vegan ready meals

Post by hobo »

Holland & Barrett have a 3 for 2 deal on these pouches http://performancemeals.com. H&B have the veggie options. I've tried the veggie curry and the red bean and brown rice. Both were actually OK.
Pros: Long shelf life, ready to eat, high protein, tastes OK
Cons: Expensive, even on a 3 for 2 offer

One packet of chilli red bean and brown rice provides 356 kcal - 18% of average adult intake, according to the packet.

I'll be sticking a few vegan ones in the cupboard and taking a few with me, along with self heating bags to a festival in 2 weeks time :)

Our local asian shop has a range of veggie ready meals too, but they tend to be very salty. A pack of Uncle Ben's rice and one of those and it's a quick Indian in your BOL.

To remove too much salt in food:

Food not containing dairy - squeeze in some fresh lemon juice

Add in a quartered raw potatoes to soups and stews, remove before serving

Balsamic vinegar will neutralise the taste if salt, add sparingly till taste is how you want it

Add sugar or honey as this will help to balance the flavours

Finally adding plain yogurt or tomatoes will help to disguise the flavour

Pick whichever will be best suited for your over salted food, not all of them.

I've used the potatoe trick in stews and soups before and it does work!
