Motorcycle tankbag essentials

Post by Trawlerman »

I ride a motorcycle and carry a few essentials to help keep me going in one way or another.

Here is an interesting link that discusses what items a motorcyclist should carry.

Being stuck out in the rain at midnight with blown fuses is no fun at all. Believe me, i've been there!

No replies on this thread yet so i'll expand it a little.

My bike isn't the biggest around but we do get to some really out of the way places. Even places that are not far away from civilisation can often be tough places with no phone signals and very few people around. Whenever out I carry a small amount of supplies to keep me going.

My bike is fitted with a 40L Topbox from Givi
also a 12L Givi Tunnel bag that sits between me and the handlebars.
The space under the seat is also used for storage of handy items.

Ear Plugs in a pillbox on Keys (an essential item for out-of-town riding)
Surefire 6P in small glovebox compartment
Plastic shopping carrier stored in glovebox compartment
TomTom Rider 2 (always on when riding. removed when away from bike)

Under Seat:

Spare Leather Gloves
Waterproof Over Mittens
12 V Tyre Compressor with multi-mode distress light
Hi-Viz Tabbard
Trangia 1L Bottle of Petrol
Electrical Pliers
Screwdrivers - Posi and Flat
Interchangeable Bit driver
Small box with 80-odd Interchangeable bits
Fuses
Helmet Hook cable
Assorted Cable Ties
Service Schedule and Recovery details
Can of WD-40
Rags for cleaning
Sunscreen
Waterproof Over Trousers
Polyester backed roll-up mat
2 Flat bungies
2 Normal bungies
Tire Gauge
First Aid Kit (well stocked. also includes immodium, windeze, paracetamol, ibuprofen, insulin and needles)
XENA Alarmed Disc Lock
Oxford small D-shaped lock
Grip Lock
3 Nested Funnels for oil/fuel/coolant filling
Kickstand Plate - recycled a large rubber pad from a railway sleeper

Tank Bag;

Motul Helmet and Visor Cleaner
3 x Philips street atlases of East Yorks, North Yorks and Lincs
Bikers Bible (New Testament and various biker stories)
Hand Sanitiser
Cleaning Cloth
Tissues
Charging Cables. Mini USB / Micro USB
Spare USB Cigarette lighter adapter
Kraft Knife
Wet Wipes
Hearing Aid Batteries
GoPro HD Hero2 (not always carried and removed when away from bike)
Batteries for above
Always at least 1L Water for when out and usually more.
Sunglasses
Spare Bandanna

The TopBox is usually left empty for carrying my dSLR camera gear and some lunch. I sometimes store my tankbag in here when away photographing.

I like your list of items I ride a burgman 400 and have a 30L top box and a set of panniers as well as under the seat storage I carry a first aid kit and a small tool kit and a few bits and bobs for quick fixes so I can at least get home all in all we motorcyclist preppers have to be prepared to look after our vehicles even if it's not for SHTF.

I like the Trangia bottle for spare petrol. Obvious when you think about it but I've never heard of doing that before.
My prepping consists of bugging out by bicycle so any comments are likely to be based on that scenario.

I went with the Trangia bottle as it fits under my seat with no problems. I didn't want to go with a generic Sig type bottle as Petrol would rot the seals in no time. Also if i'd gone for a small 5L fuel carrier it would have to be strapped on the back which would causes issues if there were an accident or it would get nicked in not time. Perhaps even used to set fire to the bike

Luckily a local was selling these Trangia bottles for £2 each on Gumtree so I snapped up a couple. Bargain seeing as they are well over a tenner usually!

I have been thinking about this too, I have just done another cbt and am looking for a cg125, I aim to move on to the a1licence before the cbt runs out.

My main reason for the bike is to take me to work and back (works doing not mine), but I could not help thinking of what I will need to carry with me, ive been thinking of removable saddlebags, I may even put something together myself from 2 military packs.

your lists are great and give me alot to think about 8-)
