Note for mods: I am aware you want members of the media to contact you first before posting here, which seems fair enough. As a new user I can't seem to use private messages to do so though. This is almost certainly due to my technical ineptitude...anyway, you also say you moderate the first ten posts. If so, I'll let this count as my message asking permission!
Dear Preppers,
I am a reporter at The Times, writing about prepping in the light of Ebola. Please ignore this if you, perfectly understandably, don't want to chat to the press. But if anyone with a family who is taking the Ebola epidemic seriously wants to talk I'd be very keen to set something up - possibly anonymously if necessary.
Best regards,
Tom

I'd like to make a suggestion. Perhaps Tom could compose and post here a list of questions he'd like answered. Folks could, if they wanted to, either post answers here or PM them over to him.
It gives posters an idea of what Tom is after, and it gives a certain amount of anonymity to those who'd like to give answers in private rather than public.
Tom, people are, very understandably, wary of the press.

That works redskies, I like that.
Re: UK Media - The Times
I would advise any member here to tread very, very carefully. The media have never portrayed anyone(recently) who is remotely self-reliant in a positive way.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

It means people have some sort of idea where the article will go before having to agree to anything. That, to me, seems sensible, from both perspectives.

I would say the same. I am extremely wary of how the MSM portrays self reliance - odd, weird, somehow inferior, the list goes on.
Ideally, it would be great if at least one journalist could go away from this site with a more balanced view. No offence to Tom, but I'm not holding my breath. It'd be nice though.

Happy to. Essentially though I'm just looking to chat to people who are worried about Ebola and preppers, and ask them what those two things together mean - ie. how you prepare and when you act.
It took a while for my initial post to be moderated, so I've actually chatted to a couple of people already. My deadline is close and I think I've probably got enough - but my editor might come back wanting more. I don't want to waste anyone's time, so I'll let you know if I do need to speak to more people.
Best,
Tom
