KIDS BUSHCRAFT KIT

Post by munchh »

My yongest (he's 7) is fully into all the bushcraft type stuff i am and cant watch enough of Ed Stafford and Dave Cantebury.

So i am determined to get up the woods with him, i had already ordered a blue and a red one of these for both my boys for Christmas
http://www.knivesandtools.co.uk/en/pt/- ... folder.htm

But i thought he really needs a small kit, so while i was in my local surpluss shop, i came across these kids gas mask bags, they have back pac type straps on and are made of canvas.

I made him watch the 5 c's video from Dave Cantebury and we started on the kit.

Has anyone else done anything like this for their kids, i want to keep it simple and i will let him use a knife an axe and a fire steel when with me.

What do you all think?

Honestly?

I'd get him a fixed blade, he's not going to use it unsupervised and it'll be safer.

My one daughter has the Coldsteel Finbear, she's 10 it's been her knife (one she chose from my collection) for a few years now (2-3). She's been taught knife safety, it's been hammered into her and it's emphasised every time she picks up a knife.

Other than that I'd say good on him and you ;)

yeah i get your point, the swiss army knife was more about that christmas i remember first opening mine, i do love a pocket knife.

There are other knives he can have a go of, im a bit dissapointed i missed the opinel kids knife.

I also made the mistake of popping into Millets today! 1/2 price sale and 30% off on top at the till!

Anyway he now has an aliminium 0.5l waterbottle, because as he told me "Daddy, i really need a metal bottle as i cant put the plastic one on the fire to boil water"........

 I'm so proud.

Yep, I help my children prep but they are in their 20s

Joking aside, I'm a DPM fan and fully aware that others are not that keen on military wear.
However, my son, son-in-law all follow the same style of prepping that I do and so we arrive at my almost 7 year old grandson.
Last weekend me and Mrs Wulfshead were having a weekend away in Yarmouth where we found a rather good army surplus store.
Bought the little chap the kids CCS 95 pattern jacket and trousers plus a 15 Lt DPM backpack.
It cost me and the wife circa £50 but is really good quality tiny reproductions.
What is more important is that now the little fellow sees himself as in the same club as his granddad, uncle and dad. We have noticed him taking a more active presence with us as we chat prepping stuff.
He is picking out his own bag stuff for Nanny and Granddad to buy and is really thinking on scale to fit his little BOB.

I think our purchases for the lad are great preps for no greater reason than now he is taking a more pro-active interest in HIS own kit.

lol bless him, Incase you didn't know (even if you did for anyone who doesn't) the majority of aluminium bottles have a plastic coating on the inside, make sure to check it before boiling water in. There are metal water bottles designed with boiling in mind.

I have this one:

I'm thinking of getting this one:

yep, right there with you, i have.... hmmmm. My wife would say far too much gear, but i see that eventually the kids will need real gear, so i have prepped for that :geek:
The fact is we do not live somewhere that we could have a fire, so anything we do will be with my stuff that is meant for heating water, its just good hes thinking the right way already.

you have heard the "1 is none, 2 is 1" theory to gear mentality i hope, well we are a family of 5, so i need spare gear :D
