winter preps

Post by tyr1986 »

Hi all
I hope everything is going well?
I was recently reading about the snow storms and Arctic weather that have recently hit places like buffalo in new york, there were stories about people being trapped in vehicles and stuck in their homes for four days.
So here is my question to you all:

1. What preps are you up to in case the weather turns bad?
2. Do you have anything packed in your vehicle? In case you get stuck or can't make it home.
3. Whattype of preps do you have in the home in case you get stuck in the home?

Hot water bottles, tinned foods + mung beans and rice, fuel for the alcohol and camping gas stoves, flowerpot candle heaters, ethanol for the bioethanol fireplace, thermal clothing, loads of old jumpers, 200 tea lights, olive oil lamps (but am out of olive oil! Must get some), mini elliptical to help me keep warm indoors if needed.

As im new to prepping winter is something I am prepping for atm. Grabbed some batteries from poundland to be stocked up on in case of power cut for torches etc.. Have water in case pipes freeze. And have tins to cook on the hob unless someone can say gas can freeze? :D In fairness, I don't think im ready if anything was to happen.

Just looked into the burn times of the tea lights and:

Wilko
100 for £2.00 giving 3.5 hrs each (total of 350)
30 for £3.00 giving 8 hrs each (total of 240)
30 various scents for £1.50 giving 3.5 hrs each (total of 105)
15 maxi size for £3.00 giving 9 hrs each (total of 135)

B&Q
200 for £5.00 giving 4 hrs each (total of 800)

Rather like the pillar candles that burn for 70 hrs, will purchase tomorrow as these will fit inside my hurricane lamps. To keep candles handy in an emergency, tall empty food jars with a bit of wax melted inside to keep the candle upright make cheap, easy to grab safety holders, stashed in easy to access places. Sorry I do tend to waffle on a bit

I had my brother grab some from ikea last time he was there 500 for £3! I noticed Asda are doing jumbo tealights, forgot to pick some up though.
Also as I drive around all night (last nights freezing fog was particularly nice  ) I now have extra waterproofs, extra warm gear and my crusader cook set with me, I might chuck a sleeping bag in for good measure.
