My idea

Post by itslee »

I don't know how people store food etc.. but I am thinking of storing foods but in kits. My aim is to have food for a few months, so I am planning to have weekly kits. Food that I can use within a week and open a new pack the following week. Im doing this because people seem to store rice/pasta/dried food etc.. in large bags. Once you open a bag like this you would have rice open to air and therefore starting to go off in some way.

I am looking at getting bags which can hold around 1kg of dried food. That way then I can use that 1kg within that week while other preps stay a bit fresher.

Can anyone see where I am trying to go with this? Or am I just making it harder for myself.

We're not bothering with pasta, just rice, and we're stocking up on boil in the bag rice 125g portions. We're taking the bags out of the flimsy box, putting four in a zip-slide bag and then putting the bag in a storage box. Sealed from air, protected from light and pests. They're also ready to grab at a moment's notice if we need to bug out - we haven't got a bob ready yet, but have the bags and stuff stored in such a way we can grab stuff quickly.

Most other food is either tinned or packeted singularly and packed again in half dozens in zip-slide bags. Not as cheap as big bags/boxes of stuff but more convenient when you haven't got time or space to be storing food tubs in multiple kgs.

Pasta and white rice will last almost indefinitely and do not need air tight sealing to preserve them, so buying bulk 10kg bags for example shouldn't be a concern and is more economical and takes up less space than buying portion sized rations.

After all for one 10Kg bag, you'd need 80 x 125g packets, and if you start multiplying this up for multiple 10Kg rice and pasta, then you'd soon be needing a pretty large storage cupboard ;)

The small bags are great for Bug out Bags etc, but in reality how many of us are going to be bugging out and leaving our supplies behind?

Nothing wrong with your idea Itslee. In the end it is what you are comfy woth the main thing is that you are storing food. To be fair, a set of one week meals at least alerts you to what is in storage, time-wise that is.
Regarding bulk packs. We are ploughing through Basmati rice at the moment. I bought some5kg bags back in 2011. The last of those expired in January this year. We are half way through it and it tastes just fine. Just have to keep itin the dry/cool/dark, like all foodstuffs.
If you make up packs, then vary the contents week by week. Yesterday I was reading about the foodbank issue(and the recipients). One young man said that even though he was so hungry, he literally could not force down the same food he had available.
