What are you eating from your garden in December

Post by jansman »

All you gardeners out there. We are currently eating parsnips, leeks, brussels, oriental greens and radishes from the greenhouses, jerusalem artichokes and perpetual spinach. Then there are the stored onions and fruit and salted runner beans. . What about you?
Is your garden, no matter what size, providing you with food right now? I always think Winter is a tough time for fresh food, and that if there were supply problems they would likely as not be in Winter.

Well from the surrounding areas

Elderberry made into liqueur
Brambles turned in to Apple and bramble pies
Blackcurrants for jelly
Strawberry into jam
Cider from apples
Baby carrots
Baby leeks
Haylage from 4 acres

300 tons of well rotted manure given to farmer next door in exchange for 30 round straw bales
Be Prepared.
Plan like its the last loaf on the shop shelves.
Plan like its the last beer in the fridge.

Brambles, strawberries and raspberries in jams
Elderflower/berry, rosehip wines
Marrow and cougette chutneys and, my favourite, piccalilli!
Frozen brambles, chillis and runner beans
Still in the ground - cabbage, kale (yes, that's right, Lil!) and brussels

Need to grow and preserve more next year!

Leeks have been a great success this year. I dropped a little pellet of chicken manure down each dibber hole before dropping the leekling in when planting, and they have responded really well.

I've also got swede, parsnip, black cooking radish, purple-topped turnip, and kale. I've got to get better at ruthless thinning to get bigger root crops though. Some are on the small side, and the slugs have taken their toll of the purple-top turnip.

Blackberry jam, plum and nectarine jam, marmalades, all made earlier in the year.

Because of one thing or another we failed to store as much this year but still have fruit stored , and there are beet roots , chard , leeks, pachoi and a few carrots left in the ground. Unfortunately the sprouts haven't done as well as hoped this year.

My leeks have been very indifferent to be honest. Like Featherstick, I have black cooking radish. Pit some in a stew at the weekend. Superb. Shall grow them again.

As everyone else has mentioned, we're eating stored jams/chutneys. Frozen veg - it will take us til the summer to eat all the runner beans..............

Homegrown garlic, bay tree is doing well, assorted herbs. The polytunnel is still doing well with leeks and lettuce, spring onions but not a lot else. Still, soon it'll be planting season....

Good to see that you chaps have access to fresh food. However limited. Shtf this would compliment your stores.
