With the mrs now 8 months preggers (its a boy and we are calling him Harrison for you nosey people) I have suddenly realized the difference A, in her intake of food and vitamins etc etc but also the fact that all my lists and calculations i Have now have to change.
So do i just adapt and then stop?
No, I am going to now prep with not only us in mind but the chances of an extra mouth to feed because and epic SHTF scenario who knows that 2-3 months down the line (while trying to keep warm) we conceive another child coz if im honest the only Condoms in my preps are because the sas recommend them as emergency water carriers. and i doubt they will still be making the pill etc etc
Just some food for thought for those of you That think of everything except the things that happen everyday.

Make sure you use sharp scissors, or use rubber bands

May as well get in a load of Calpol + Ibuprofen for kids and anti-histamine syrup for kids, you'll need it all anyway + theres a really good one for when they get measles to stop them itching that I can't remember the name of + Pine Tarsol solution - kids love bright yellow baths
I thought everybody carried condoms in case of an urgent temporary meaningful relationship post SHTF - I can think of easier ways to carry water...

Benadryl's pretty good for itching, plus the diphenhydramine makes kids drowsy. It's only short term and I wouldn't use it during the day, but to help them get some sleep at night with something like Chickenpox it's good.preparedsurrey wrote:theres a really good one for when they get measles to stop them itching that I can't remember the name of
I'd also go for ViraSoothe which you can get in Boots, it's the modern day replacement for Calamine Lotion and works very well to hydrate
As preparedsurrey said, get some kids anti-histamine stocked up too against seasonal or pet allergies.
Oh and as you're dealing with a newborn, get a doctor's advice before giving them/applying anything until they're at least 6 months old.

Re: Prepping for an extra person....
Congratulations and good luck to you and yours BSTS, these aren't the best of times for parenthood, the generation above mine were pairing up just after WW2, my eldest sibling was born before the 50s, me the 60s, but they were optimistic times, in my late teens and early twenties i feared bringing children into the world because of the finger never being too far from the nuclear button, little did I know how much safer that would now feel than what we have these days
Not meaning to depress you there, what is preparedness without a future generation or the prospect of there being one after all? Parenthood is a game changer, a life changer, can be a wonderful thing, but it's a reason to be, more to fight for, more to live for, the very best of luck to you and yours, take him shooting
and Harrison? do explain, is there a Star Wars connection? if so may the force go with you all also

I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Congrats to you both.
This is an interesting area to prep for and something I've given a lot of thought to. Although I am past having kids my own children may at some point give me grandchildren
How do I prepare for that?
As well as stocking up for extra adult mouths to feed you need to consider what will a baby need.
If mum can't breast feed for whatever reason (and believe me even with all the best intentions it doesn't always happen as it should) then formula milk is a must. Plus bottles, teats, sterilising equipment (withy using power), nappies (washable and disposable), dummies (whatever you think now they can be an absolute sanity saver), clothes (all ages), wet wipes and also plenty of flannels for when the wet wipes run out. It's a pretty endless list.
Save and store all the baby clothes so you can re use them. Financially that is a good prep too. Children don't care if they are wearing second hand clothes. Accept with gratitude all passed on clothes and equipment. You can always just put it in storage for now.
Think ahead to weaning. Homemade puréed food is best so look for a hand crank mincer type thing. Although a potato masher works quite well.
Other people have mentioned the usual medicines but make sure you have some Infacol. These are drops used to treat colic. Bloody brilliant!
Hope that helps.
