I have recently come across this
http://www.amazon.com/KA-BAR-Fighting-U ... usmc+knife
And thought alpha male might like one as a present
I am hoping for some advice here from those who know a lot more about sharp pointy sticks than I do. It looks like a good knife, I like the fact it is partially serrated and I assume one can hone the blade into a super sharp 'like a hot knife thro butter' blade. The knives he has are quite old now and apart from the odd opinel I can't find a brand on any of them
It's not an inexpensive purchase so any feedback would be appreciated
Thank you

Re: USMC Kabar Knife
What sort of tasks is the knife likely to be used for?
Also being on Amazon.com, I'm sure how easy that would be to import to the UK, but you can buy Ka Bar's in the UK:

I love this fella. Crazy tests, way beyond normal use, quite literally tests knives to death...
Hard use testing: Ka-Bar USMC: http://youtu.be/AwFoJIPA_ys
He does manage to break it but when you see what he's doing to it,it's not surprising!
My own preferred camping all rounder is an Esee 4. Shorter bladed and more expensive but incredibly tough and capable.

@ Devonian
Excellent, thanks for the tip
Knife would be for general use at home I should think. I was thinking he may want to use it for dealing with meat/fish, as it has a serrated edge I thought it might be useful around the garden (it's a big garden )
It looked like a useful multi purpose knife that was good quality. He does have knives for specific purposes, but I thought that as an all rounder, handy to have on him at home it would be good to have. It's not cheap and not something he would say, ooo, look, only 80 quid, I'll have one. I suppose the real question is would you be pleased to have it if your OH bought it for you. Or would you think, shame, if only she'd spoken to me first, what I really would like is a buck thingymajig
I have bought him opinel in the past (see previous post) and he liked the blades. In fact he's stolen one of my kitchen opinel (sorry love, it was just right for the job, you can have it back.......if you want it...........) and I've had to replace it!
Seven inch blade isn't too cumbersome or too small I think. Although a number of his home knives are longer, I thought this would be a nice 'inbetween' fit - as long as the blade is good quality. Which it appears to be
Sorry I'm rambling. I'm going to stop now
@Eddie enzyme. The esee 4 looks lovely, but we have a number of similar knives (not in the same quality bracket ). The blade length can be limiting which is one of the main reasons I like the 7" kabar

Just had a quick look at this video. WHAT IS HE DOING? The man needs shooting I've never seen anyone treat a blade like that Didn't realise it was a coated blade tho. Does this impact when the blade is sharpened?EddieEnzyme wrote:I love this fella. Crazy tests, way beyond normal use, quite literally tests knives to death...

No, the actual edge is not coated. He's a crazy madman alright!Stasher wrote:Just had a quick look at this video. WHAT IS HE DOING? It's a good knife, I'd fancy one myself and you certainly can't argue with its pedigree.

Re: USMC Kabar Knife
Ka-Bar has a UK site.
Is this the one ?
http://www.kabar.co.uk/store/KA-Bar-Kni ... tml#SID=68
Also available in green.
http://www.kabar.co.uk/store/KA-Bar-Kni ... tml#SID=68
And a short bladed version (which you might not want Stasher)
http://www.kabar.co.uk/store/KA-Bar-Kni ... tml#SID=70
I personally don't like serrations and have never understood why half serrated blades seem to have the jaggy-bitz right there
However, you're not buying it for me
Ka-Bar make knives for people who can't have a blade fail on them.
And they turn them out at a really good price, cheap enough that you don't feel guilty about making them work for a living (just not Mora/Hultafors inexpensive.... But what is?)

Agreed, I'm the same, they seem to have such limited use and the back end of the blade always seems to be the most useful section of the blade for most cutting activities.
Re: USMC Kabar Knife
As a 'boy', I would rather be consulted on purchases, especially expensive ones, I would suggest to him that you're thinking about spending a certain amount and you were thinking about XXXX but what would he fancy, ask for a few options and then you get to 'surprise' him with something that he really wants. I can't speak for all of us but we're a simple lot and we generally have a few ideas. Good luck with whatever you go with.
Re: USMC Kabar Knife
Had a look at the one on Amazon whilst logged into my account and does not ship to the uk, however one of the other sellers will for $70 + postage, which comes to £65 delivered if you dont get hit with customs...............Stasher wrote:I have recently come across this
