Lidl sugar is no longer cane sugar

Post by Stasher »

As jam makers know cane sugar is what you want opposed to beet sugar. Lidl sugar always used to be cane but last year they changed the packaging and the type of sugar disappeared from the packaging.

I've spoken to Lidl and they have confirmed the sugar is now beet.

Have to find somewhere now that stocks Tate and Lyle as most of the places round us seem to sell beet sugar exclusively

I just thought I'd better flag it up before anyone stocks up ready for the summer....................

Stasher, whats wrong with beet sugar for jam making?

I was wondering the same. Over the donkeys years I've made jams, jellies and marmalades I know have used both and not noticed any difference.

There's nothing 'wrong' with beet sugar. ;)

Cane sugar is (in my opinion and to be honest in the opinion of others I've spoken to in the past) is the superior product. Cane sugar melts at a lower temperature and also foams/scums up less when jamming.

I think beet sugar is fine for bunging in drinks and 'quick bakes', but out of preference I would ALWAYS use cane for jamming activities and if I'm honest I prefer the baking results as well

I've found that since using cane sugar exclusively in all types of preserves the end result is consistently of an excellent standard. In the past when using beet sugar I have been less than delighted at the cooking process and the end result at times.

It would appear that it's just me on here!

As an aside I also think (maybe it's just my imagination) that cane sugar has a better depth of flavour with less high notes

Still - I will be seeking out cane for culinary purposes.............and I thought others may wish to know that Lidls have gone for the root veg option

Hope that's as clear as mud now!

Well, thanks for the info, can't say I've noticed any difference. :)

Agree with stasher, cane sugar is better than beet for jam but if beet is all I have I will use. I noticed the lidl packs had no mention of type of sugar last time I bought some, so I asked, but the staff didn't know why they didn't have the info on the pack. I assumed it was beet so thanks for confirming it.

Thanks for the info Stasher. I will probably try jam making later this year so things like this get filed for future reference. The other thing to note about sugar beet is it is grown in the UK rather than abroad, I think it is processed by the British Sugar corporation.

Waitrose does 5kg packs of Tate and Lyle ? could be larger can't remember of the top of my head at what I think is a reasonable price, only use cane as I prefer the taste and the 5kg packs make it more affordable in the long run.

The Cooperative Fairtrade sugar is cane sugar.

It's supplied by the Kasinthula Cane Growers Association in Malawi.
