Dried Store Bought Seaweed Experiment

Post by nickdutch »

Dried sea greens purchased at the local chinese supermarket come in flat rectangular easy to store packs and woudl probably last a long time. Possibly a good store of naturally occuring vitamins and minerals for times of having a low income.

But how do you take it? Ideally raw to preserve the natural nutrition, but with what raw method?

The sea greens come in dry sheets, that gave me an idea.

After having tried snipping bits off and adding it to the water in a nutribullet and it not really working all that well, i decided to dry GRIND the dry sea greens in the blender into a fine powder, then add that powder to the water in the blender cup to make my "smoothie".

I reasoned that as the particles were so small they would absorb water at a faster rate and would then give up their nutrition in the digestive tract with greater ease.

It was quite nice.

The next stage is to see how long I should soak the sea greens powder for to ensure that I am taking soft foods into me. And also to see how nice it is to use the sea greens powder instead of salt on my boiled rice for lunch today.

Thats very interesting, Nick! Particularly about using it in place of salt. I'll be going by a Chinese supermarket in a couple of weeks, I'll have a looksee there.

It might be best to soak it on reflection, or have less of it.

I have started to feel a bit off colour, and I am not sure, but maybe the raw dried seaweed was partially to blame, I think I have also had a bit of a belly bug that has been going around too, so whether I am off colour because of the one thing or the other I am unsure.

Interesting idea. This is the stuff you roll sushi in, right?

Is it Nori Nick? If so its ready to eat and doesn't need to be soaked. This is the one used in sushi dishes.
