Gerber Dime Review

Post by metatron »

A little over a month and a half ago I was looking for a UK legal carry alternative to my trusty Swiss Army pen knifes, so the search was on. As a die hard Leatherman fan of many years, I thought I'd try them first, but I have to say, nearly all their models have locking knives (which is fine when I'm working) and they're a little bit pricy for their smaller models (big ones I understand), so I thought I'd check out their main competitor Gerber, which is when I noticed the Gerber Dime, and with the attractive price tag of £16 with a lifetime warrantee I thought I'd have a punt.

First things first, it's small, key chain small, but it handles very well and doesn't feel like a small tool, and I have hands like shovels.

Tools wise you get:
Sprung pliers in the centre.
Sprung scissors
Small (non locking) knife.
Flat head screwdriver
Metal file/suitable cross head driver
Tweezers (very firmly integrated into a slot)

The tool itself is designed with a bottle opener on the top.

Overall the mini multitool oozes quality, and I'm likely to buy a bunch for friends christmas gifts, as they do them in a few colours. After 4 weeks of it in my EDC rotation, I don't see it going out of my system, fantastic product!

Yep I have one and its a very good keychain tool.........

But

1) The black will come off fairly quickly in your pocket making them look a bit rough

2) The pliers are poor when using them for rotating something, I used them for twisting a radiator bleed valve and they bent with ease , and then found they were so soft that I could bend them back by hand, ok for gripping not twisting

However the lifetime warranty is good , broke mine being hamfisted and got a new one no questions asked.......

Still loving the thing and it gets used a massive amount. I've not had any issues with the pliers, but there not super sharp, so I ended up putting a bit more of an edge on the cutting part as I use it to cut cable ties and it wasn't doing it out the box.

yep, paint is a bit of a miss but I still kind of like the look.

Can I ask where you got it for that price? I can't find then for less than about £25.

Amazon, I bought another four as gifts as they were on for £11 the other day, now the lowest price is £15.

I'll second this, I've had experience with Gerber customer service after i broke a screwdriver on my MP400 multi-tool.

I enquired about getting the broken bit replaced and was told to send it to them for inspection, within a week i received a brand new complete tool! with a new pouch too!

Not used the Dime but it looks good for a small keychain tool, i know my MP400 has got me out of a few fixes where i'd had been stuffed if i didn't have it.

I wanted to add a micro multi-tool to my EDC, hopefully on my keys so I just got one of these. The all-black version looks very cool and tactical but reviews said that not only does it come off quite quickly, it makes the tools very stiff to open so I went for the green version which looks very nice to be honest.

It hasn't seen much use in the couple of days I've had it but it feels like good quality and by the sounds of the comments here, Gerber's service is good quality as well.

Being used to only carrying just the necessary keys on my ring, it has made them feel a bit heavy but I am trying to go from 'minimalist' to 'better equipped minimalist' so I'll get used to it.
