Tins (Oxo, Old Holborn etc)

Post by Alloneword »

I miss the days of the 70's when these things could be found eveywhere, but nowadays they are fairly rare and IMO cost a bomb on ebay, i'm looking for some tins like them of varius sizes, to keep things like sewing kit etc in, also Oxo tins used to be good but latest lot i bought from Tesco were so thin it was untrue and the lid hardly stayed on, I have searched on here and some folks mention pound shops, checked them out but nothing round here, I'd love suggestions for shops in London so i can have a good "feel" as i like to feel the goods normally first or failing that some online shops would be good, i do want decent quaity as i can see no point in saving a fiver now and them falling apart in 2-3 years time when i may need them, oh and square or oblong over round would be better as well.

I avoid any metal tins as they're so thinly made it's pointless using them, not to mention they're nowhere near waterproof.

I recently got a load of small plastic storage boxes whilst in Ikea, there are about 15 of varying sizes, most oblong with rounded corners, cost about £3.50.

I got it mainly for organising things at home, so they didn't need to be unbreakable or 100% waterproof, though they look pretty decent for the price. The things that bother me are that firstly I had to go to Ikea(!) and secondly that they're plastic, so pretty much as environmentally unfriendly as you can get

I just can't find any other good options

This time of year a lot of shops are selling various sweeties in tins, might be worth looking around Lidl would be worth a look. Wilkinson's are doing a Dove men care set in a good tin with clips over the lid for three squids at the moment.

And people buy tins as pressies, especially this time of year. I've got a lovely, good sized tin with black cats on  that I now use to store my camera gear. Nothing impressive, but it stops the dust gathering, sits behind my laptop, always available.

I've got a tiny little tin just available to me, about the size of a tin of shoe polish (very old coconut oil from The Body Shop  it had gone rancid) - wondering what I can use it for in prepping terms, I could make up a little sewing kit, which people were talking of on here, or I could do the fun thing and start some emergency fishing preps

If you like mints, try some Altoids, the tin they come in is very handy.

I seem to remember the old fashioned Oxo tins had sharp corners, they were pretty solid though. What about tins of biscuits? Some still come in a tin, I've got one here in front of, about 10x8x1.5 inches (roughly) It was shortbread originally.

As some of you have said this time of year is a good idea to look for stuff, i had not thought of that, i could give as pressie and ask for tin back  , having said that i presumed tin would be best but tupperware kind of stuff might be cool as well as they offer a degree of watertightness (soz for poor English), thanks everyone

There's a certain romance about an old tobacco tin that a new plastic tub will never achieve.

Having said that, Sistema do a wide range of clip-close, gasketed, waterproof tubs and boxes in a very wide range of sizes. Bit more expensive than Ikea but if you need the kit to be watertight these are worth using.
