Hi, can anyone tell me what is the safest way to store a butane cylinder? I have a small portable gas heater already fitted with a cylinder and this lives in a metal cupboard in my living room along with the dog and chicken food. I want to buy a second cyclinder (just a 7kg one) but there is no more room in the cupboard. Would it be ok stored next to the cupboard in the alcove, do you think? It would be well out of the way, would not get knocked over or bumped, and there is no heat source in that room save the radiator on the opposite wall.
I could, if necessary, wrap it in a tarp and keep it outside in the back yard, but am a bit worried about keeping it outside in extremes of temperature, ie the freezing weather we have now, or heat in the summer - my yard faces south and is an absolute sun trap in the summer - when we get any sun, that is!
Thoughts, please!

Re: Storing a butane cylinder?
I'm a bit worried about storing it myself, the balcony dosen't seem far enough away from my living room for my liking. I have to get a new one tomorrow, mine just ran out about an hour ago, I kinda lost count of the hours, but I think I got a good 120 hours out of my 15kg bottle

Thanks scoobie.
Might think about wrapping it in bubble wrap and a tarp and storing it in the furthest corner of the yard which is dry and quite sheltered....

Re: Storing a butane cylinder?
Butane blue cylinders will freeze outside. I'd store it inside but get a gas alarm/detector. I got one on Amazon for a tenner. I have a calor gas cooker but it runs off propane that lives outside.

Store it outside for safetys sake..... give it a blanket to stop it freezing solid and bring it into the porch or conservatory half hour before use just to warm it up.
Top tip for gas stove users....... if its cold, put it into your jacket before use to warm it up, you'll save on wasting gas trying to get it to work, gas saved equals an extra cuppa!!

Re: Storing a butane cylinder?
Storage is pretty good, I think the canister would rust out first. As aleady mentioned, if long term storage is more realistic, get a gas detector for it, and store it close to fresh air. Ideally, in a shed next to the door - A you can easily check the detector inside of having to 'find' the bottle amongst stores and B if there is a leak, you should smell it first before switching on a light, preventatively, next to the door helps the gas dissipate instead of building up
