water purification tabs

Post by munchh »

Cant find the answer to this one, so ill put it out there.

most tabs ive seen say, one tab per 1l/32oz of water, but as 1 litre and 32 are not the same amount.

depending on the converter you use its equal to 33.8fl oz (US) and 35.2fl oz (UK), there are also "imperial US"

Whats going on?

32oz (US) = 0.946 litre

so can we assume a single tab is good upto 1litre?

blimey! :?

Yes. However, I have never purchased them without the ' proper' measurement on. That is , not American.

I forgot to say, ive come to this while looking for a new stainless water bottle, so do you buy a 1 litre bottle or a fancy 32oz one?

I've assumed that if they say 1L then they're probably good for 1.1/1.2L, allowing for a degree of inaccuracy although I've nothing to scientifically base this on. Although I did buy some 'big' ones that say they do 20-25L so I guess there must be some leeway.

"Each 167mg tablet treats 20-25 litres of suspect water".

If anything this may muddy the waters (sorry couldn't help it).

See now ive always assumed that if it says 32oz you are short of a full litre so you would have to leave out 40ml?

Its very ambiguos. But gettin ill is still getting ill.

Im going to stop worrying and just go with 1litre. ☺

Not wanting to realy send you over the edge.....but have you tried filling your water containers to the brim and then pouring them into a measuring jug?.... Prepare to have your mind blown!

Flexed my google and found out that the WHO recommends minimum 5ppm chlorine for water purification.
Also at least one brand of tabs gives the dosage of 1tablet per litre, but their own literature states that one of their standard small volume tablets gives you 10ppm chlorine in a litre of water.
Read it yourself here.

Overdosing like this is probably safer.

It would help if the directions read "one tablet treats approximately one litre/32 floz"....... That way my OCD wouldn't rear its ugly head
