Aldi have leeks, swede, cherry tomatoes, sprouts, kiwi fruit and lines for 49 pence this week.
SWMBO picked one up this week. Clever marketing - in a box which highly resembles an organic veg box. No other packaging - spuds, onions, leeks, peppers, savoy cabbage, carrots. The spuds were a bit scabby and need peeling. The leeks were slightly old. Nothing wrong with the peppers or cabbage except they were a bit small. Not bad for 3.50 and worthwhile supporting if you have to go to Asda.
It could be argued that the pound-a-bowl shops on the high street are doing the same thing as most of what they sell is Cat. 2 or supermarket grade-outs. They also keep money local-ish (if they're not sending it back to Pakistan), and are more a part of the local shopping eco-system than Asda. And you can choose what you want, and get fruit, rice, beans and other staples too, usually.
