Most likely to happen here?

Post by diamond lil »

What do you think is the most likely major crisis/disaster to happen to us here in the UK?

Severe weather (for the UK)
Social unrest from job cuts, fuel and food price increases
Terrorist attacks depending on which way we lean with middle east/north africa
Full economic meltdown/hyperinflation...take your pick

Economic, for my money. ;)
Weather, well, I live on the edge of it and am used to extremes, but those seem to occur more often now.
But economic crisis, already here, we are just at the beginning of it, and I believe it`s gonna get much worse.

Thinking on this - IS there any way we can move to protect ourselves from a financial crisis ? For instance we live on Pension Credit. Our money goes into the bank every week. If one week it stopped - what could we do ? Nothing. We can't go into the office and haul the boss over the desk and demand a cheque or some of the petty cash. I think we might be screwed. How about you ?

Imo, we have no chance whatesoever. If the recession crippled us (and it has, me) then total economic collapse will ensure I never recover financially.
I may be oversimplistic, but really feel that in the not so distant future, actual `stuff` will be the only currency we use, that and skills. So that perhaps trading food for skills, or skills for clothing, or food for jobs done, etc.
And that might not sound so bad but it will be. For one thing not everyone can produce enough food to have enough to barter. And who here can produce clothing and bedding from scratch? Who has skills to trade?
I see money become more and more unrealistic as taxes and interest soars beyond the capabilities of ordinary folks, and common goods now become luxury future goods. Already folks are letting go of things they took for granted before this stupidly named `economic downturn`.
Might sound all sci fi-ish but don`t you think it isn`t really so far off?
Some folks are cosy enough in ignoring the warning signs now, but with institutions like the NHS happily going down the pan, how long before we are all speedily struggling to find sources of either free food or land to grow on, livestock is already increasing in price, and more and more people, denied the services of a dentist, for example, are resorting to either going abroad whilst they still have funds, or even doing it themselves!
I know that because I`m so remote, getting to the nearest hospital costs me dearly, so quite a few times I`ve `left it be` to see if illness clears up itself. I know of one local old woman for whom this cost her her life, because she couldn`t afford the transport to go to outpatients 120 miles away and because the only hospital transport here (which is voluntary) declined to take her as she wasn`t `ill enough` not to get there under her own steam!
So, I`d say we`re seeing the beginning of an end here, really. Might only be around the edges at the moment, but don`t worry...it`ll spread out evenly in the end. :?

As a self employed man Lil i have the luxury of getting paid upon completion and latley i have been insisting on cash for my work but you are quite right about payments in the bank/post office etc

Depending on how stable an employer is will be down to the indevidual to tertermin, but if the company was in financial trouble its unlikely the boss or owner would tell you untill the company folded

A perfect example is a friend of mine was recently laid off from is building work along with 10 others and he told me not only is he chasing the months wages but it turns out the company ran out of money months back and they havent paid his taxes or NI contributions

Alarming times we are in eh

Hard times. Grow more veg and save some cash then? Lose debt, gain skills, cut down your outgoings & expectations. I have a DIL who would scream and faint at the thought of not having a dishwasher.
