Hello. New (but older) Prepper here.

Post by Julel »

Hello.
I'm relatively new to prepping but a combination of ill health, followed very quickly by retirement (am now thankfully much better) 18 months ago has made me seriously rethink my priorities. I don't ever want to come out of hospital again, after a fortnight in critical and intensive care, to empty cupboards and no way to fill them. Maybe at 62 I'm too old to prep in some ways; but I've spent the past eighteen months losing weight, getting a lot fitter and thinking hard.
I'm not sure if this is the right place for me, I'm thinking of making sure that I'm prepared for domestic, rather than zombie apocalypse, disasters, but I'd really appreciate some help on getting started.

Welcome, it sounds like you've come to the right place, we're not that big on zombies and that here either. There's loads of stuff on here, have a look around at the various threads and don't be shy, if you've got a question and you can't see anything ask away. The one thing that seems to recur is a lot of us didn't think it all through so my advice is have a think about what your priorities are and work towards them, whether its stuff like floods, the empty cupboards you mentioned or something else will be very much down to you. There's loads of stuff online that seems inspiring but might not be for you, its easy to get carried away, I did.

There's threads on here about 'bug out bags' and stuff as well as more day to day things so take your time and see what works for YOU and try and enjoy it, there is (or can be) a hobby element to it, make yourself a cuppa and get comfortable, there's oodles to look through.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

You're never to old, or young to start the prepper lifestyle.

The fact that you've joined a Forum and have thought about food storage puts you way ahead of the majority of the population.

Take your time, have a good read and ask away. :D
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Hello and welcome to the forum , it's never too late to start ! You will find that its not all about the end of the world people prep for changes if life, think of it as grown up scouts " always be prepared" , for many of us its a form of insurance, if the car brakes down we have spares if it floods we have an arc :? Maybe not but you get the idea , many of h s try to be as of grid as possible and as self reliant as we can be , but this is a great place to come if you need help and info !

Hi and welcome to the forum. As the others have said, you are never too old to start and everyone's' prepping is tailored to their own circumstances and abilities so it's just a case of finding what your needs are and digging around the forum for what will work for you.

Welcome! You're in the right place, never fear - we may talk about zombies very occasionally for a laugh, but most of the disasters we refer to are a hospital stay, as you've already experienced, a broken water main, an extended power cut, that sort of thing. Personally, I've experienced being on the wrong side of a police cordon when a local post office underwent an armed robbery and the surrounding streets were shut down, a flood, acute emergencies in my immediate family needing instant long distance journeys ... prepping can help with all of that.

Its quite a straight forward process but having said that nothing to be rushed in to in a blind panic. Slowly work out what your concerns are bit by bit with the help of creative thought and research and then slowly take steps to address the deficiencies in preparedness in the various different areas of life.

Thank you all for being so welcoming. I'm going to take it slowly, stock up my store cupboards with foods that will keep, and that I know we'll eat, and then begin to look at other areas where we m ay not be as prepared in as I'd like us to be. We do have productive allotments and keep bees, so that's a bonus and a blessing. I've been reading through the threads slowly, there are some amazingly good, helpful ideas here.
Thank you again :)
