Grains in pet plastic lemonade bottles.

Post by cornerstone »

I have seen it around for some time the storage of flour rice grains and sugar in water bottle in particular the 5 litre ones and was thinking of having a go at that with a bay leaf at the bottom and at the top in place of oxygen absorbers not for long term just for a year or two after freezing the stuff for a few weeks first

edit.
The grains i have in mind is
flour
sugar
lentils
oats

along those lines

I would think twice before storing oxygen sensitive product inside PET a bottle. PET is a poor oxygen barrier. Oxygen will creep back in - absorbers or not.

Wot?

Bay leaves work as oxygen absorbers? Truly? As a cost efficient storage system (if I've read this correctly) that is going to take some beating.............

No they don't act as an Oxygen absorber. :D Bay leaves are however used as an insect repellant. :)

I can't see a problem with using drinks bottles for storage of a year or two at all.

i saw it on you tube, they actually collapse the sides of the bottles so you know there is a good seal

 thanks Brambles - hmmm, may try adding bay leaves to the current boxes

@ Cornerstone
I store rice etc just in ordinary plastic boxes in the original cellophaney packaging for a couple of years at a time with no obvious side effects. Unless you're buying in bulk I don't really see there's a need to decant the contents from the shop packaging

As Stasher has mentioned, if you practice a good rotation system, for shorter term storage as you've indicated, you shouldn't need to decant at all. :)

Just a thought but would wrapping the bottles in masking tape help their integrity ? It would block sunlight and maybe provide an extra barrier. Dunno, just off the top of my head.
