Car repairs and maintenance

Post by AlwaysPrepping »

Hey,

I was just wondering if anybody would know of any good books or material on the essentials of prepping to do with cars.
Now i am no mechanic and know nothing about cars other then to drive one, so if anyone does have any info that could help towards this side of prepping i would be grateful.

Thanks.

The Haynes workshop manual series has got me out of many a patch .
Available at Halfords and all good bookshops.

Second the Haynes manual, they're not available for absolutely every car but they are available for most and are worth every penny.
If your car isn't an completely brand new model then you can usually pick them up pretty cheap on eBay too, they'll have the odd greasy fingerprint but you'll end up getting them on it yourself so I wouldn't think it's a problem.
If you can't get the one you need on eBay then I think you can order the entire range of them (there's loads!) direct from the Haynes website.

You may be able to find a forum for your car model - members are often very happy to help with advice (after you've read previous posts...)

Alternatively, your local adult education may offer courses, although these are less common with cars being so electronic nowadays.

There isn't much the amateur can do at home any more - even an oil and filter change on some models will necessitate restarting the processor which can only be done at a garage.

Good luck.

Hey, thanks for the replies i will have to look into the haynes books, as my car is nothing special just a family car(zafira), but as long as i have some knowledge of it then hopefully the car will always be up and ready to go if needed.

Thanks again.

Had the heater recalls done? Fire risk from fan motor bearings seizing due to water ingress and setting loom behind dash alight from memory

Have a look at your local college for a course on basic car maintenence, they were certainly running locally to me a few years ago including one for ladies.
