Hi all

I've only got 2 wheels at the moment, but thinking of getting 4 again. What make, model, type, etc of car would you recommend for ease of repair, availability of parts, reliability, simplicity, etc?

Now theres an easy question with a easy answer
Let's start with the basics
Whats your budget , what do you want to do with it, where do you want to go with it , what size do you need , how many seats , what load capacity do you need, you say 4 wheels what about a twin axle rear, you say car but would a hatchback ,estate, car derived van ,4x4, pick up , van , truck or bus do the job too.

You talk about easy of parts is this to remove or refit , modify, reliability of the ..... air freshner or the main bearings or the headlight bulbs . Simplicity ......... well I'll leave that there .

So whats you're level of knowledge. Are we takling about you run to halfords or a main dealer to get a wiper blade changed . Or just for shits and giggles you change your head gasket for fun because you dont like the colour. What tools have you a 20ft custom built snap on container that has power, air and a lubrication center . Or the small plastic tool kit from lidl's for 10 quid .
Are you happy to get grit in places only your wife gets to see or you dont want to break a nail

In the end my opinion will be different from the next guys , my experience of ford or fiat will differ from the next guy .

Welcome to the forum .......

There's an awful lot to consider as has been pointed out, for me the maths are simple we cannot afford to run a vehicle which would suffice our needs to "bug out" the one we do have is economic but could hardly accommodate the whole family for a day out never mind a bug out, and barely fits all the stuff we take out to play for 3 out of 5 of us for our hobby  As for maintenance I'll admit I'm almost clueless, I've never had a garage and never fancied messing with the motor on the doorstep where we live.

There's also the consideration of how the roads would be in such an implied event - 2 wheels may be the only effective way through it.

Many years ago I considered what we would need to escape a calamity ( this is before I heard the term prepper or saw the TV discovery channel version) in fact there were only two children back then ( all are adults now) and only 1 cat  it was looking like a long wheelbase transit sized van was the only option to get us and what we thought was enough to rough it for a week or two anywhere. After that I've never really considered bug out an option and my worst nightmare is getting back home in a dreadful scenario.

For me the dream would be as some here do, have a home from home on your very own patch of land, and spend a fair bit of time staying there, the vehicle is then in the main about getting from a to b with the essentials.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

I have a Skoda Octavia estate which is permanent 4x4. It's the tried and tested 1.8t petrol engine, which is in VW golfs, audis and skodas. In fact my wife used to have a Golf GTi and it had the same engine and I had a Skoda Superb with it in too.
Only problem we have ever had with these engines is coil packs going, which are an extremely easy DIY, can be done in 5 mins and small enough to carry spares.
This isn't my daily driver it's actually the dog car but I've never been let down by it in some extremely muddy forests and it has bags of room and comfort. It's a 51 plate and cost me £400.

Bug out vehicles make me confused. What is their purpose within the UK? Driving around my neck of the woods it seems you're either on a road which any vehicle can use, or in a small field surrounded by impassable stone walls or hedges.

I believe it's not necessarily about having a bug-out vehicle in which to..um...bug out (i.e. drive across the moorlands in your Landy to your remote cabin). In either a slow breakdown (e.g. financial collapse) or a sudden catastrophic event (e.g. giant tsunami) the quality of the roads on which you will be driving to go about your bugged-in daily business (assuming you have petrol/diesel/chip fat) will undoubtedly be less pristine than they currently are (or are not!) as they will either not be cared for, or littered with debris. Probably both. Therefore my much-loved little mid-life crisis MX5, with its low suspension, will struggle to get through, whereas a sturdier, higher, 4-wheel drive vehicle stands a better chance of getting me from A to B. So whilst any vehicle can indeed drive on the roads at the moment, that will probably not be the case once any kind of S has HTF. Particularly if you live in a city or town. You might want to be looking at a 4x4 just to drive down the road to Tesco, or visit your Dad, or get to work. The vehicle in question is not just for The Zombie Apocalypse, rather every possibility in between.

Living in London I have an annoying dilemma: until the S hits the fan, I can only drive a pristine, non-polluting vehicle which complies with the Low Emission Zone regulations, otherwise I have to pay £100 a day to drive it. So the much desired ex-Military Landy is, alas, off the cards as it can only be used after armageddon has hit! Sigh...

Oh how I sympathise

every day I look at Land rovers for sale and wish, how i wish. (its justification not money)

I own a bog standard estate vehicle which by its nature is the best middle ground one i can afford but i use it to shoot fish go to the allotment camping and all the rest, its got the necessary space for everything I currently need and good fuel v millage and its not let me down yet of course I would like a 4x4 but that's not gonna happen soon, but when this one dies then :D :D

I am sticking with 2 wheels as my budget cant stretch to 4 of any type. My 2 wheels means biking and I am jut becoming obsessed by pedal bakes. I have two more cycles that I want to save up for and I regard myself as nearly fit enough to join the cycling club so that means that I will be doing some "proper" cycling soon. My time doing local circuits around the city and using the outdoor gym has paid off to a degree.
