thin bleach versus thick bleach

Post by dazthechippy »

hi all

just doing a bit more on water preps, ive read somewhere about using thin bleach to purify water by using low doses, just wondering would thick bleach do the job too and is it a case of adjusting the dose or would it not break down properly?

asking as id love to know and off to the shops at the weekend

cheers all

Thick bleach is thin bleach with a thickening agent added to make it 'sticky', I don't know how food-safe the thickener is though.
Treating water with household bleach containing 5.25-8.25 percent chlorine
Volume of Water to be Treated Bleach Solution to Add
1 quart/1 liter 5 drops
1/2 gallon/2 quarts/2 liters 10 drops
1 gallon 1/4 teaspoon
5 gallons 1 teaspoon
10 gallons 2 teaspoons
The above is from Here, its a US site and probably uses US gallons so adjust accordingly.

Please remember that liquid bleach breaks down over time (I think heat, UV light and oxygen speed the process) so if you store bleach it needs to be added to your Rotation.

The long term storage options are chlorine water purification tablets (these also have a shelf life but its much longer), or Hydrated Calcium Hypochlorite (aka Pool shock) from which you can make up small batches of liquid bleach as and when needed (I don't currently have the dosing rates for this to hand)

As ForgeCorvus says, thick bleach has an agent added. To make it stick. To toilets usually. You do NOT want that in your drinking water. Personally I would spend 20 quid or so on a Sawyer filter and boil the water that goes through it if you feel it needs it.

Puritabs do the job,and are good short term ( I have plenty) but long term I ( personally) would boil filtered water, even if it were filtered through an old t shirt in the absence of a proper filter.

These lads aren't heavy although a balled up T shirt or whatever is better than nothing, even a used sock will filter out crap although if you're sharing the water there might be a scissor/paper/stone to see who's sock you use.

There's also the 2L pop bottle packed with moss/sand and charcoal, its going to depend on where you are and what's available. Personally I carry some puritabs in my wallet (my wallet is my altoid tin effectively), more in a small pouch that either goes in my pocket or in a grab bag and more in my FAK's (usually one in the grab bag). These will run out though so I'm back to the sweaty sock potentially. :(
