I'm not going to pretend I fully understand this but others more aquainted with bitcoin and the like my grasp the idea better than I. In light of threads on here about monetary collapse , hyperinflation , electronic currency , barter and all the rest along with events in Catalonia this article has made me "mmmmm" a bit at least

Re: Catalonia
Estonia has done quite a lot already compared to many other countries.
In Japan and Hong Kong, crypto currencies such as Bitcoin and Litecoin are accepted in many retail outlets as payment for all number of goods.
Starbucks (or Costa?) accepts bitcoin in some states across the USA.
Russia and China are already ahead of the game in developing their own blockchain technology based currencies, which are likely to be underpinned by gold (China) and Oil/Gas (Russia) so we will probably be seeing the end of the petro dollar quite soon.
The Caribbean nations are in advanced negotiations to opperate the worlds first digital blockchain "stock market" using Veritasium.
The IMF have recently conceeded the positive potential for blockchain tech and crypto currencies, although I think their "interest" is based more on developing and introducing a one world (digital) currency uner their sole control. Central banks say its all a bubble and wont go anywhere or come to anything, other than making them all redundant.
There is a whole new world of financial management developing at the moment and its happening fast. The total market cap for crypto currencies is now $172,263,153,888 (as of this morning Sunday 29th Oct)
I think people on main street will be hearing a lot more about it in the next few months years. Its a hard new concept to get to understand I know, but so was the internet and "apps" at first.
It makes me feel sooooooo OLD!

Got to admit, I've not got a scoob about bitcoin etc. Now I know how my mum feels about everything after about 1980.

I've been doing a little research. Seems to me this whole crypto currency is not only something of a Ponzi scheme, its also linked to drug dealing, terrorism and the Dark Net.

I get spammed incessantly about bitcoin.

And when you get this sort of shite it just HAS to be a scam.
When it sounds too good to be true, then it usually is.

Re: Catalonia
Fair play for doing the research, my gut was the same without doing any research. I tend to think I'm not any worse off as my default setting. A combination of ignorance on my part and being a big pussy when it comes to speculating coupled with the little I did know making me think it was a 'dodgy currency' to trust. That its been mentioned on here a bit got me curious though.jansman wrote:https://www.theguardian.com/money/2017/ ... ent-gamble

Those who got in early with Bitcoin made a fortune. But yes, J, you are right, it was a foolproof way for people to trade on the Silk Road, which was shut down by the FBI.
BTW - awesome documentary on the tellybox about Silk Road a few weeks ago - absolutely mind-boggling!

You can make a lot of money off free bingo offers if you know the system, which I learned on moneysavingexpert - I can point anyone to the part of their forum that goes through it. It's had a lot of changes because of input from Gamblers Anonymous, and you have to learn it *really* slowly, but its possible.
Bitcoin - I'm absolutely certain that 99% of what we see is a scam, and also that it was adopted by the dark web to pay for illegal activities, but I also have a vague online acquaintance with 1 or 2 people in bitcoin mining syndicates (though they won't talk about it, rats!) and I'm sure it can be done legally, wiht a small profit.
So can other stuff - like being a lender on P2P, which I *do* do, in a small way. Not spectacular, but there.
**coughs**
The headline of this thread is Catalonia. And as I write, the tv is still showing that door to the government offices in Barcelona where Puigdemont (sp?) works - is he going to turn up or not? Spain is the only Western European country with a civil war thats still just about in living memory, and it certainly still has huge fallout from having had a civil war so recently. It could get bad, depending on what happens over the next year or so.
