Just had a cunning idea. Turn an old crisp bag inside out. Wash and dry it. Turn it right side in.
Then you can measure out one portion or one meal worth of rice, pasta, grain etc. Put it in the bag and use one of those handy battery powered resealers.
If you pop in a small oxygen absorber and a silica gel sachet, it should last decades.
Even if if isn't a perfect seal, perfect wash out etc. You have only lost one portion, not a 25 kg sack.
remember to put a label on the bag or marker pen the contents!!!
Dont throw crisp bags away
Re: Dont throw crisp bags away
But not all crisp bags aren't made of mylar, thats one of the reasons crisps bon't stay fresh inside and go soggy after a few weeks past their best before date, some are just foil and plastic.
The cost of a mylar crisp packet would increase the cost of the product as mylar is pretty darned expensive

Re: Dont throw crisp bags away
Double bag them
And yes it is mylar. the main reason they go sft is due to bad seals. also the mylar is thin.

Re: Dont throw crisp bags away
I'll just use my proper mylar I think, wouldn't want to risk losing stuff for being a tight wad and using second hand bags that have dubious qualities.
Re: Dont throw crisp bags away
Hmmmm...that sounds a bit dodgy TBH. I'm with Gnoley on this -proper mylar is definitely the way to go, I think.
And, just say it did work - how many crisp packets would you need to bag up a years worth of pasta and rice - especially if you were double bagging them? Any savings that you may potentially make on not using proper mylar bags would be eaten up (no pun intended) buying 20 pallets of Pickled Onion Monster Munch!
