Toilet roll vs baby wipes

Just throwing this one out there. Which would you stock. Debating if the baby wipes is the way to go as they are/seem more compact. Only real negativity is that you can't flush them. What do people think ?

If the baby wipes dry out during storage, rehydrate with warm water for a bird bath wash.

We only keep a few wipes for those occasions when we are travelling and have no access to wash our hands but we do keep a pretty decent stock of toilet paper. The downstairs toilet is called my toilet by my wife and to be honest the used toilet paper from there goes on the compost heap ( not sorted out the proper composting toilet yet so it's better than nothing) and it's flushed with grey water most of the time. . We were talking about alternatives the other day but i'm afraid there was little enthusiasm so it looks like we'd better keep a decent stock in.

You can make your own wipes with cheap jey cloths - tesco do 10 for a quid - cut down to size, a box with a lid & something like surgical spirit or distilled witch hazel. Disposable but not flushable - just bin em.

You can get the more expensive cloths & make them reusable. Again, witch hazel, but a tiny bit of dissolved soap in there, along with a little glycerine.

In a ' grid- down ' situation,sewage pumps will not work.Grenfell,hit the nail on the head,as waste will have to be disposed of by burying or composting,so bog standard toilet paper is best ( see what I did there! ) as wipes are as eco - friendly as a flight to Spain!

I mentioned that we had discussed alternatives. If it's simply wiping then moss makes very good toilet roll , old cotton bedsheets can either be burnt or will over time compost. The most obvious one is to wash instead of simply wiping , not necessarily the sponge on a stick the romans used but the same principal. After all one washes plates and faces , we don't just wipe a bit of paper over them . I'm sorry to say these suggestions were greeted with "ugghhs no way" by wife and daughter so toilet paper it is. I've seen my wife squatting over a potty when she had no other choice but i sincerely hope that it never comes to a situation where we can't use "proper" toilets , the moaning will be horrendous

We've always taken the kids wild camping from a young age, they were totally at ease with digging their own hole & backfilling it afterwards. They are now in their teens and although peeing in the woods isn't an issue if a hole is required then they would rather hold on to get home.
I still like to think that they would see the necessity of digging a hole if it ever came to that. But maybe I'm blindly naive

Great comments about this. I'm doing both, but having the wipes as easy to transport if we decide to move out of the house. I may bury some water bottles in the woods. At 17p for 2L it doesn't matter if I forget where they are...lol

I'll toss in the cheap packets of pocket tissues, its easy to have a pack or two in your pocket, they cover a multitude of 'sins'. I ended up using some in an emergency the other morning out with the dugs and it wasn't for any of the orifices on my face.

Wipes are handy for a wash when out, even if you have a wee wash kit, you can use wipes on those 'bits and bobs' that you don't really want to expose to daylight.

As Pseud said further up, both have their uses depending on the situation.
