Insect bites

Hi,
quick question..
1) what can i use to prevent insect bites, was working out in a wood last night and seem to have been bitten all over.
2) If i have been bitten, what is the best treatment to stop the itching etc.

2) mosquito coils
3) insect repellent
4) dab of toothpaste on the bite

I suffer terribly with mozzie bites on holiday.
Use a insect repellant with a high Deet concentration. It'll feel like you've been tear-gassed by the riot police but it works.
Also take anti-histamines, most people get bitten but some react worse than others (people who say "I never get bitten" do get bitten, they just don't react).

I've heard that one touted before, does it actually work? :O If so then I might have to make a single exception to my Avon no-buy.

The only other thing I can think of that's not been mentioned is citronella oil - if you blend it with a carrier oil like almond or coconut then you can apply it to the skin and it keeps the mozzies away for a few hours.

Well, if it's Scotland-proof then that's the ultimate endorsement! I judge a lot of my bits and bobs depending on how well they hold up in the Highlands.

For the bites - I use hydrocortisone 1% cream. I've tried skin so soft but not convinced. Another ploy is to take Vitamin B tablets - apparently the insects can smell it through your skin and don't like it. Anyone had Vit B and still got bitten?
