Consultation on transitional arrangements for edible insects in Great Britain

Post by Stonecarver »

Not worried about powering the whole house, just eating hot food, getting a brew, seeing through the dark, and staying warm.

Won’t happen in this house. I’ll go and shoot a rabbit or pigeon for my protein. Or catch a fish.

I reckon it will almost certainly come and having tried eating them abroad ( can't remember what species) I can't really see a huge problem except for the yuk factor that some people have. That yuk factor is often seen with offal. I quite like an occasional pig's trotter but most turn their noses up at them. But then , most people will eat sausages and pies made with all sorts of mechanically extracted meat without problem. Serve up a plate of grasshoppers and most won't eat it but made into a burger and more will. That's how I see this issue progressing. Alternatively it could go the other way and they could be aimed at the high end of the market. Think snails which hardly seem appetizing but are sold as a luxury food , escargo.

After watching videos from British and American farmers regarding the government's in both countries not paying the grants and pushing farmers not to produce livestock I ask a local farmers he said yes it's true ando his sons only keep a few headays of cattle for shows .

So it's true the decision has been made insect burgers here we come .

Or feed the insects to chickens and eat the Kentacky fred chicken 🐣🍴😁

I know nothing about this topic, apart from the fact it sounds revolting. Just like a Hindu would feel the same about eating beef, or a Jew or Muslim would with pork. I just read this:

https://www.theorganicprepper.com/eating-bugs/

The idea of insect borne parasites doesn’t swing it either!

I did wonder if there is a bit of professional rejection jansman? There is certainly a logic to using insects ( millions of people already eat them ) but to a skilled butcher like yourself there's not going to be much filleting to be done on a mealworm. In a similar vein as a joiner I can understand the logic of using waste in the form of chipboard but I'll be buggered if I want the furniture in my house made out of that shite...

I could cope with eating insects like this:

I think the trouble is that in the UK eating insects is entirely associated with food that has gone bad which instantly results in the gag reflex.
In other countries insects are normal Think Australia and Witchetty grubs and the old biblical locusts and honey. All sorts of insects are eaten in Vietnam although my friend who spent time there told me that even he couldnt stomach the deep fried cockroach!
