Ultraprocessed Foods - Open Food Facts.

Post by Frnc »

Being single and not into cooking, I rely too much on processed foods. Now, there is a category worse than processed: Ultraprocessed.
Open Food Facts is a free app. You scan a barcode and it will tell you if the products is Processed or Ultra-processed. I tried the app on two Aldi pizzas. One was ultra, the other (Aldi everyday essentials cheese and tomato pizza) was Processed, lower in salt, and cheaper. App says for this one good nutritional quality, low environmental impact.
As well as scanning, you can type in to search.

Learn to cook, its healthier and a lot cheaper.

Its safe to assume all ready meals are full of crap so you don't need an app.

Even things like bread are Ultra. And I like pizzas!

I would hate to think what the bacon grills are or spam but in tough times we will eat what we can get and beside the fact i love SPAM and the bacon grills omg i make a mean bacon gill fritta .

I know people need these app things but do you not feel you are letting tech stuff take over your life , like doctors they keep telling me use the app i said i do not have a phone that does apps and i do not wish to just pcik he phone up when i ring .

I am sure that app is good for some people needing to watch say sugar in take or fat intake but me i just well eat what i can .

But as someone said learn to cook you will love it it took me getting major ill for me to take up cooking and omg i love it

You'll feel incredibly smug when your first loaf of bread turns out perfect, the strawberry jam you've made is better than shop bought, your pasta sauce is restaurant quality and even your humble mint sauce is better than Coleman's ;)

My nine year old granddaughter phoned me at 06:15 to tell me she's coming over and wants to make choc/Nutella sponge cake and a chicken curry...so that was my Saturday morning extra hour in bed ruined ;) ETA 11:00

The amount of salt in processed food is criminal, one slice of bread can contain anything from 0.5 to 1g of salt a can of beans 2 to 3 g , simple lunch of beans on toast can be 100% of you daily recomended amount of salt 6g.

Please read the label carefully.

Your so right i was told many years ago no wheat no dairy but well i do have some now and then i do pay the price pain wise or bloating and upset stomach but here is the point , look at labels they are getting better a lot fo stuff they have removed wheat and are using pea flour so it is getting better , but we also make a huge amount of meals from scratch and also our own bread and jams and chutneys you can not beat home grown or home made you never will , grow lettuce next year and pick one and get a shop brought and make 2 sandwichs you will see the difference in taste i mean this to everyone thinking of growning not just you vit .

I have been watching a prepper who says we should run to the woods if the country fails but i am what i am going to call a home prepper , i will stay here as long as i can if i had no choice i would have to leave but we would defend this until the very last .

My point on that is make rasied beds in your garden if you have space or even a window box of herbs and so on i use a hydro grow light system in the lkitchen again now for herbs as i am getting in to medical herbs to but grow your own people , if i can help anyone with advice on making raised bed as an ex chippy i will i would try and make drawings i could email to people if they are total non diyers , i would lay it out in very basic terms some thinsg they try and make it to complicated for non diyers and it puts them off .

Ok hope i did not hi jack the thread it is sort of on course

Exactly, and I'm supposed to be on a low salt diet as I have kidney stones. I use a calorie counter app that adds up the day's salt so it's easy to keep track of. It's very hard to get down near 3g a day. As you say, 2 slices of bread is at least 1g straight away. Cheese is another biggie, I eat Sainsury's Emmental slices because they are low. Sadly, all Quorn products (a staple for veggies) are fairly high. It's even in cereal. I'm not supposed to eat too much whole grain so I eat things like Rice Pops and Cornflakes.
I make my own gravy mix which is 0.5g large serving, compared to Bisto 2g or Bisto low salt 1g.

Others to watch are gravy granules and stock cubes , your might as well just eat salt.
