Cash or card?

I have just read a group of articles about cash use,rather than cards or smartphones. Especially now folks are feeling that money is tight Cashless society: Lincoln firms have their say on cards replacing cash https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-l ... e-64264683

Prior to having to give up work , I was a cash man to be honest. I refused for technology to take over! My wife however was a card person,debit card. I never used mine. I ( was) an eBay user,and my credit card went through PayPal for security.I would spend,then put cash in an envelope,and when the credit card bill came in,pay it at the bank. Simple.

However, apart from ( now) very few online purchases- my wife uses debit not credit - we are BOTH cash! In fact my credit card will gather dust! Now ,on a Saturday,my wife draws the cash we need for the week,and it’s put in envelopes,the old fashioned way, and put in our little safe. It works.

Anyone else do this?

Paid the TV licence at paypoint in cash they told me that they haven't had that ..kind of payment ..for over a year
Had some money for one of grandkids in card for her and my daughter said can you bank transfer her it plz she doesn't use cash ..she has just turned 9 ..they just tap a card now ..

I use the only person serving at a checkout instead of self scan ..to try keep them in a job ! Using cash

I'm afraid we will lose the battle tho and it will be cashless sooner than we think
Will mess up my car boots

Not just me then? We found the retail staff in various places are a bit ‘put out’ when you pay that way too! And as you say, the self scan is loss of job too.

I almost never use cash. I only use it to pay the window cleaner and hair cuts. I could probably pay for the haircuts using a card come to think of it. You can use a card on the tram, or even a bus. There's no minimum, no charge.

I never use a credit card.

I prefer using a debit card to cash, because with everything digital, I can keep track of my spending easily. The bank app on my phone is instant log-in by facial recognition. It shows pending payments, which the online web page doesn't. I record all my spends in the apple Numbers app, a simple spreadsheet. I have a separate column for groceries, whisky, preps, household, and one for all. So I can instantly see total spend for the month, plus a breakdown. I have one row for how much I PLAN to spend, ie target minus what I have spent, for food and whisky. Target for food is £100.

I only use cash as the shops if I need to get change for the windows, or to give a couple of quid to a homeless person. Then I have to record my spend and get more cash out. My cash reserve is quite small these days due to going overdrawn to pay for the roof.

It's not even just self scan now. Sainsburys have an app where you can scan everything as you walk round, and put it straight in your bag! Personally I keep it in the basket. You have to be careful because once I changed an item to 2, but forgot to take the second one, so I ripped myself off. Or you could forget to scan an item and get done for stealing! Also once I scanned a bottle of whisky but for some reason it showed as 2. I only realised when the checkout said it was a lot more than I expected. Probably should make a point of getting receipts.

The other day I bought 6 packs of stock cubes using card, no receipt, put them in my pocket, went to Tesco, and then thought the security might question my bulging pocket, and I'd be unable to show I got them somewhere else! I usually take a rucksack and carrier bag.

I only use cash unless I have no other options, when they changed the bank notes over you couldn't just swap them in a bank it had to go through a account so any under the bed cash went back into the system.
After the 08 crash many kept cash at home and the authorities didn't like it .
They want control of your cash ... so only use cash .
Remember Greece the state no letting folk have their own money ... that's a European democracy and only a few years back.
Just a few weeks ago Britain lost billions in a day because of a unwise decision our country's finances are far from safe and secure we owe trillions upon trillions .
Buy a good safe keep your mouth shut and cash at home .

Youre right ... but like jansman its habit ...its what we've done and we will have to get used to the new way of doing things eventually
Friend of mine was in a cafe the other day and a robot served her..spoke every language took cash or card and brought her order to table ..

I may go hide in a tent in the woods and hunt rabbit

I hardly use cash. In fact, the last time I used it was on holiday - Icelandic kroner. I buy online. I have plenty of cash at home, but I don't currently go into local shops, or travel to specialised shops. It is what it is. If our purchases are tracked right now, "they" know everything

I prefer cash, and spend locally where possible. That’s usually day-to-day stuff such as groceries. Bigger purchases are usually online by debit card. I also use real people at the tills! For their jobs and my own mental health - Life is isolating enough already
I set a budget and roughly stick to it but don’t record every transaction. I’m probably a few quid out by the end of the month.
