My BOB

Post by Carrot Cruncher »

I repacked my BOB this week and listed everything that was in it (again). I thought I would post the details to see what others think, and see if i have missed anything obvious. The BOB is for 2 people for a minimum of 72 hours with some bits of kit (fishing line, snares etc) in case things drag on for longer.

All criticism welcome....but be nice :D

The kit is all packed in a Pro Forces 80 L rucksack with a fair bit of room left over, and weighs 17kg, or 37lb in old money. A bit heavy but manageable until I replace some of the kit for lighter options. You might think the clothes etc are over the top for 2 people but I go along with the idea that any fool can be uncomfortable, I want to survive in comfort :D

Don't take this the wrong way CC as I don't know your personal circumstances but is there a reason why you are carrying enough for two people? I wouldn't want to suggest sharing the load if you have to be the one carrying most of it.

Why the empty bottle? - at that weight another pound won't make that much of a difference so you might as well fill it with water.

It is for 2 people unfortunately (for me :D ), MrsCC can walk fine but not with any weight on her back/shoulders etc, and you are right about the bottle, I should either fill it or leave it out. The clothes are more of a space issue than a weight issue, but one of the ways I got the oh to go along with things was to point out people on the tv who were evacuating with just the clothes they were wearing and nothing else.

To me it's all a compromise between weight and comfort, realistically we don't even need food for 3 days, let alone a couple of shirts etc but....... it keeps the wife happy :D

Thanks for the comments

Ah, i thought it might have been for something like the reason you mention but I was trying to be diplomatic about it :D :D

If you are having an issue with the clothes with reference to space rather than weight then one solution could be to vacuum pack them, that way you have reduced the space they take up and they are easier to pack.

You say it's to keep Mrs CC happy but that's actually good thing. If you can keep up the morale of your fellow "bug outer" then this will keep your spirits up, an important part of the equation when times are tough.

If you think that lot is bad Lil, wait till I list the car kit
I think my GHB which is stashed under the seats is as big as a lot single person BOB's, and thats not counting all the extra kit in the back of the car.....if we ever breakdown in normal times the RAC man will have a shock when he finds us on the side of the road sitting in a big old pop up tent having a 3 course meal

Oh yes, I'd have a good supply in a car, but not to carry. Which just means I'm lazy...

I have a similar BOB for 2 people but packed in 2 rucksacks.
Clothes are very important and I too have a spare set to change into, the difference is that mine is vacuum packed (like EAprepper also suggests) which makes it waterproof and takes less space. I also added 2 boonie hats and 2 winter hats, 2 pairs of gloves, 2 mesh nets and mosquito repellents.
For lighting I would also ad some light sticks.
I also have 2 small axes.
I'm not a fan of tarps so instead I have a lighweight 3 person tent and 2 military ponchos which can transfrom into small 1 person tents.
The whole lot is packed in a dry bag and then in the rucksack.

Forgot to ad that I also have spare batterries and lots of water.
