Number one all-rounder

Post by diamond lil »

What's your all-time must-have most essential & flexible food for preps? The one great multi-tasker in your larder? Mine is not one but two - porridge oats and lentils.
Porridge for breakfast, oatcakes, flapjacks, crumble topping, bread & thickener for meat stews.
Lentils for soup.
What's yours ?

Rice for me I think

Having said that I have just started eating porridge again after detesting it when I was a kid.... my day used to insist on using salt instead of sugar and it tasted awful

Are Oats suitable for long term storage ?

Mmm, porridge with salt is lovely - I remember eating that when I was little! But the porridge needs to be really creamy.

Regarding an 'all rounder'. I would probably say oats too - I don't use them for what Lil uses them for, but I DO have them stored and I know that they are one of the most versatile things around.

I make porridge oats with half water, half milk, nice and creamy, then have it with either prunes (hey, what can I say? It`s me age.... ) or dried figs, honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon which is supposed to help lower cholesterol. :)
Oats is a good all rounder, as are tatties, which can be chipped, baked, mashed etc. Even made into crisps if you need a snack.
