Water bottle

Post by Quagmire »

Been looking at water bottles, mainly military canteens, those metal 'sigg-type' camping bottles, and those nalgene bottles.

I'm swaying more towards a military canteen with a metal cup, but proper ones seem expensive (not the cheap aluminium ones)

What do you guys recommend?

I swear by the 85 pattern British Army waterbottle and a metal mug.

They are heavy compared to other makes out there, but they are bomb proof, the ones I was issued with in 1986 are still with me and have never leaked.

Beware of cheaper imitations though.

Depends what you want it for...I've got a mexpedition nalgene bottle for every day commuting and its great...if a little large! (1 litre capacity)

The only thing is, because its a widemouth its easy to spill it over yourself if you drink it on the move! Haha!

I have a few cheap sigg type bottles for when I'm just out and about, but for use in BOB's and various other bags and in the car (ie important stuff) I also go for the 58 pattern bottle with the plastic cup and a metal cup. There are usually 2 of us so 2 cups are handy and the metal cup can also be used for boiling water. They seem to take a good battering and cope well with extremes of temperature etc.

Have to say I'm a nalgene bottle user I have a few, there probably the best thing I've used for the task.

Are the aluminium cups bad to drink/boil water?

I remember the aluminium Alzheimer's scare a while back

I worry about plastic/aluminium too. I've got a Glogg for everyday use - unlined stainless steel.

Gonna go for the NATO 58 canteen.

Should I go for the metal mess tins as well, or get a metal cup that I guess could do the job of mess tins, but take up less space?

An 85 Pattern Mug:

will allow you to have a hot brew, and a limited cooking range, like boil in the bag.

If you are only using it for a BOB kit it will serve you well.

A metal lid will assist in reducing water boil times and keep crud out whilst brewing up:

A lighter and cheaper lid can be made from the tin foil chinese takeaway containers.
