Upsidedown Tomato Planters

Has anyone tried these things ? Are they any good or just a gimmick ?

I tried two this year and wasn’t very impressed, ended up with very small plants which I didn’t get any tomatoes off. Could have been something I’ve done wrong but I won’t bother with them next year.
