Diabetic support

Post by preppingsu »

This could be a useful piece of kit.

Fast aid
A handy adjunct for diabetics, HypoWallet contains fast-acting carbs in specific doses, plus a card advising what to do for a ‘hypo’ (low blood sugar episode). Diabetes expert Professor Charles Clark calls it ‘a very good concept…giving peace of mind for patients and relatives’.

£4.99, from Victoria Health.

Seems very good value, as usually 3 x 25g of Glucogel costs about £10.95.

Remember, as well, that everyone can become 'hypo' if you don't eat 'carbs' for awhile (e.g.24hrs+) and being grumpy is never ideal when one has to focus the mind on important decision making!!!

Could be useful for everyone! :)

Hi this is my first post, i joined just to ask this question realy, My son is a type 1 diabetic and also an epileptic, my concern is in a supply breakdown of medications at the chemist for whatever scenario, once his limited supply of meds run out what am i to do to keep him alive, i have looked online to obtain medication as a prep, but all i can find are herbal things ect stuff like that.It is impossible to increase what he receives now by any significant amount.Even if i broke into all the local chemists and stole what he needs in a shtf scenario how long would it last. My question is what can i prep to have a supply to keep him alive till supply returns.

AFAIK, Insulin can be stored unopened in a refridgerated medium for up to 3 months. thereafter it will lose effect by 25% each month and there is also a risk of alergic reactions if used.
It can be stored at room temperature for 1 month.

I remember reading that Insulin can be produced from dogs, pigs or sheep. I imagine it would take some considerable bioscience type effort and a Lab.

I too am in that postion whereby I am on medication for life, which has to be stored in the fridge. Because the meds are so expensive, I am only given a two month supply at a time. There is available a type of medication that is for when you travel and it doesn't need to be kept in the fridge, but I need a hospital note every time I travel to get it and I am only given the exact amount for so many days.

Also, the pharmacies don't keep it in store and have to order it in every time I need a prescription filled, so I couldn't even raid the chemist for supplies if need be.

Even though I am prepping as much as I can, I believe should tshtf I will probably be one of the first to go due to medicial reasons. Bad health, in my opinion, is not something you can really prep for long term, unless you have a doctor in the family who can advise on alternative forms of medication to get what you need.

Thanks for the replies so far, i think all we can do is keep as much as we can and what ever near drug we can get our hands on .Maybe a realy good barter prep like a bottle of wiskey or carton of ciggys or a half sovereign to bribe a chemist if its still trading in a very limited way.

Lie. Tell the hospital that you are going on a long trip, fill the prescription for the travel variant drug but do not go. Once you have it make up some excuse for the doctor about why you have had to delay the trip but "could you please keep the travel prescription to one side as you intend to go shortly but can you please have your regular prescription in the meantime." Next month just ask for the regular prescription but say the trip is still delayed, after a couple of months of this the doctor will probably forget the whole thing (they don't really care) and you'll have a stock to hand. Next time you really go on a trip say you threw out the previous travel prescription because you thought it was old and can you have a new one please. Then use the old one and keep the new one to hand thus cycling through your stock.

Just an idea....

Yep lie ! ive (heard of this being done) ;) on several occasions to build up Antibiotics. For me ive insisted that i cant get to the doctors and demanded a persciption forwarded to boots for collection, (choose bank holidays and no means of transport so you are desperate as your throat is closing up and you need a friend to collect them). Also use ( ive dropped the packet in the dirty sink water and need replacements), (i left the bag with them in on the bus, same day go straight back and get more). They have to give you more as they will trust you :!: ..................... and on top of that for fridge meds just say you had a power cut or you went away for a couple of days and your frigde had broken and all the food had gone off, they will replace them 8-)

Does this make me a bad person
